The New York Times Company has struck a deal to buy the viral word-finding game wordle. The price was not revealed, but a fact has emerged: the amount is “in the lower part of the 7 figures.”
By purchasing the increasingly popular video game, which was designed by Josh Wardle last year, The New York Times is seeking to add to the millions of Wordle “addicts” around the world.
The acquisition is part of nyt target to reach 10 million subscribers in the next three years.
To reassure Wordle players, the publisher said that when the product is added to the list of its online games, it will continue to be free for both new players and those who have already participated in the experience.
According to Jonathan Knight, head of the Games division of The New York Times, Wordle will improve with this acquisition because the talent of engineers, designers and editors will be added to the optimization of the game’s user experience.
In early January 2022, the NYT purchased The Athletic, a sports information media company whose business model is based on digital subscriptions. He paid about $560 million in cash.
