From June 12, 2019 until today, many things have happened. But one of the ones that should have happened and we’re still waiting for is premiere of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, the sequel starring Tom Cruise 35 years later and now, with its new trailer, promises that, this time, yes, will be screened in theaters shortly after his (surprising) passage through the Cannes festival.
The need for speed
‘Top Gun’ is one of the most defining movies from the 80s, a succession of images of airplanes, magic hour and testosterone directed by Tony Scott and starring Tom Cruise before he dedicated himself to risking his life on each shoot. Now, times have changed, and if the last great superstar isn’t does stunts himselfknows that the public will be disappointed.
Therefore, for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, the actor pilot your own fighter, scrapping the CGI to show the actual distortion on his face. Alongside him, Val Kilmer returns (at Cruise’s insistence) and Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Miles Teller and Ed Harris join the cast. Who will not appear for the film is Kelly McGillis, the love interest of the first part, who didn’t even get a phone call to repeat the character.
This sequel is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who already knows Cruise from his work on ‘Oblivion’, and has the script and executive production with the touch of Christopher McQuarrie, Tom’s partner in mischief During the last years. Also, as if the movie wasn’t going full speed enough, Lady Gaga is said to have written and performed the main theme, although it does not sound in this trailer. Will it replace that ‘Take my breath away’ in our heads? There are only months left to find out while we patiently wait for the premiere of the last two parts of ‘Mission: Impossible’.
