During the early hours of May 19, tree experts planted the new ahuehuete of reformafter the first one did not adapt to the soil of the old la palma roundabout. It should be noted that, in addition to the stress generated by the change in soil, the tree also suffered from being hit by a car, which further damaged its condition.
Through its social networks, the Ministry of the Environment of Mexico City reported:
“This happy Friday, the group of experts made up of nurserymen, academic institutions and civil society planted an ahuehuete donated by Viveros Regionales and Vivero Los Encinos, in the Paseo de la Reforma roundabout.”
Regarding the first ahuehuete of reform, brother of the current one, after several studies it was concluded that the tree is still alive, so it was transferred to the Nezahualcóyotl Nursery, located in the Xochimilco mayor’s office, for its recovery.
Both ahuehuetes were a donation made by Regional Nurseries and Los Encinos to the Nezahualcóyotl Nursery. The trees are 12 m tall and 20 years old. In optimal conditions they can live up to 2 thousand years.
In addition to the ahuehuete from Reforma, the Nezahualcóyotl Nursery arrived in May 2022 with other 123 trees of the same species: one of 10 meters Tall; two of 8 meters; 20 of three meters; as well as 100 of 1.5 meterswhich remain in the nursery to complete their development.
