Throughout the year there are different ephemeris and today a rather peculiar one takes place. This is World Condom Day, which is commemorated every February 13th in more than 30 countries around the planet. This date was chosen because it was on the eve of the Day of Love and Friendship, which is when this method of contraception is most consumed. With this, it seeks to promote its use in a responsible way as it is the best way to combat sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies.
According to the sex educator for DKT Mexico, Denisse Flores, in our country the annual consumption per capita is 4.5 condoms. This is a very low figure compared to other nations. That is why she affirmed that new generations should be motivated to increase its use and thus be able to improve as many lives as possible.
For its part, the National Health and Nutrition Survey 2018-19 reported that 75 percent of adolescent men and 51 percent of adolescent women, as well as 44 percent of men and 30 percent of women between the ages of 20 and 49, said they had used a condom during their sexual practice.
On the occasion of World Condom Day, we share some information about this little invention that has a huge impact on people’s lives.
Lord or Pharaoh?
There is a legend in which the name of condom refers to Lord Condon or Condom, who is presumed to have been a court physician to King Charles II of England (1630-1685). This character suggested that the king use a hood to protect himself from syphilis and prevent him from having too many heirs.
Unfortunately, this legend is wrong since the sociologist and expert in contraceptive health, Norman E. Himes, investigated and disproved this myth in the 1940s. The oldest known data dates from more than 3,500 years found in the tomb of Tutankhamun. Of course, it is doubted that it was used for contraceptive purposes since the Egyptians worshiped fertility through their gods.
The million dollar condom
Uniq is considered the “condom of the future” as it won the Bill Gates award for innovation, being ultra-thin and ultra-resistant. It is 10 times more resistant than traditional latex because this condom is made with a synthetic resin AT10 (polyethylene) which is lubricated, it is hypoallergenic. It has no flavor or aroma and its thinness allows it to have a natural sensation.
Another totally new feature is that this condom has strips on the sides, allowing its placement to be very simple but full of pleasure. Uniq’s packaging is just as strong as the condom itself, so you can carry it with you in your purse without worry.
And what about the female/internal condom?
It is a condom that has a tubular shape with a flexible internal ring that helps to enter the vagina or anus, and with an external ring that protects the vulva or the surface of the anus from contact with fluids, it can be made of different materials: latex, polyurethane, among others. It is a barrier method and one more option to the different contraceptive methods to prevent unplanned pregnancies and together with the male condom, they are the only ones that prevent sexually transmitted infections.
Among its benefits, the following stand out:
● Using it correctly, it is the safest method to prevent STIs with 99% and to prevent pregnancy it has an effectiveness between 95% and 98%.
● It is a non-hormonal contraceptive method.
● It can be placed six to eight hours before vaginal intercourse.
● In vaginal intercourse, the inner ring can stimulate the tip of the penis, while the outer ring can rub the vulva and clitoris.
● And in anal sex, the inner ring can stimulate the P-Spot.
Condoms are also fashionistas
No, we mean that condoms are a fad or have been invited to Milan Fashion Week, although they may be there soon, as Brazilian artist Adriana Bertini has a specific mission.
Said mission is to turn condoms into garments to be used in our day to day to sumptuous evening dresses and elegant trouser suits. in other words a feast of sartorial delights with a single common ingredient: latex and something we haven’t seen in this industry. Likewise, Bertini comments that his creations are a “militant act”.
