Naughty Dog has revealed that its The Last of Us franchise has sold more than 37 million copies as of December 2022.
The New Yorker has claimed that the costs for the first season of The Last of Us were around $10 million per episode or more.
Based on the fame gained by the television adaptation of the video game The Last Of Us and the theories about how devastating it would be if said infection actually existed, we have decided to talk to you about other video games that have a world that revolves around some infection. Here are the most devastating virus outbreaks in video games.
Although it’s hard to believe, not all of the games on the list are necessarily about zombies, as virus outbreaks can ruin gaming worlds in many ways. But what is it that makes certain video game pandemics stand out from the growing zombie-infested crowd?
The virus outbreak that The Last of Us is part of seems like it could really happen. Of course, zombies (humans mutated by the deadly Cordyceps virus) abound in this game, but this viral outbreak story revolves around its two protagonists, Joel and Ellie.
In turn, the threat of the outbreak itself recedes into the background: it’s always there, but almost always in the background. It is the relationship between a young girl and an apparently hardened and emotionless adult man that takes center stage.
Although the collapse of Rapture, BioShock’s underwater cityscape, wasn’t exactly caused by a viral outbreak, ADAM addiction has ravaged its community to the point that a growing epidemic of mutated Splicers is now roaming its halls and forums.
The rot, decay, and general state of disrepair that Rapture finds itself in as a result of its population of power-crazed Splicers, make this sprawling dystopia one of the most memorable places ravaged by neglect and isolation on Earth. videogame history.
Plague Inc: Evolved is a strangely addictive and highly compelling strategy game that’s a cross between Stephen King’s The Stand and 28 Days Later. Designing, manufacturing, and ultimately unleashing devastating chemical weapons of mass destruction upon the world, your goal is to infect “patient zero” with a newly formed pathogen before watching the disease spread to the masses.
Just like in real life, the developers at Plague Inc claim that 10,000 user-generated scenarios have been formulated since the game’s early access start in 2014, three major new types of diseases have been discovered, and apparently 40 quadrillions of people have been infected by other players.
The Green Flu virus is responsible for the mayhem and carnage in Valve’s fantastic survival horror title Left 4 Dead. Unlike traditional viruses, the Green Flu mutates rapidly, and its method of transmission changes sometimes on a daily basis. At first, the Civil Defense and Emergency Agency advised people to wash their hands to contain the virus. Despite this, the green flu infected more than 2 billion people.
Interestingly, the natural immunity rate to the green flu is incredibly high. It is estimated that 22% of the population is immune. But unfortunately, these people are not immune to being eaten in the face by the zombie-like creatures that create the virus. Therefore, it could be said that they are the unlucky ones.
The parent virus is the basis for most of the other viruses in the Resident Evil series. It was developed by the evil Umbrella Corporation and is responsible for producing most of the zombies in the game, not to mention the deaths of billions of people.
The virus creates zombies, and that is terrifying in itself. But perhaps it is the scale of the outbreak that makes this virus so scary. The human race has been forced to its knees, and only the strongest have a chance to survive. Even then, it often seems like it’s only a matter of time before they, too, fall victim to the carnage.
