The artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the world of art at an astonishing speed. This merger has been the cause of much controversy, but it continues to gain space and recognition. For sample, the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) decided to exhibit for the first time an artistic work generated with AI.
The chosen piece is titled unsupervised and belongs to the digital creator Refik Anadol. Unlike those who use available tools such as DALL-E either midjourney, the American Turkish artist designed his own model of artificial intelligence. Then he trained the system deep learning to create dynamic and interactive images from fragments of works at MoMA.
“unsupervised it is a meditation on technology, creativity and modern art”, they describe on the website of the prestigious museum.
The name of the work is inspired by its own nature. The creator developed an AI model based on generative adversarial networks (GANs)the same one used to make images and videos deepfake.
These ‘generator’ systems convert the images into data, which are transferred to a ‘discriminator’ that generates new compositions from these digital fragments. The deep learning process does not require human intervention, that is, it does “Unsupervised” (unsupervisedin English).
A hypnotic collage in motion, this is ‘Unsupervised’
The installation created by Refik Anadol, which is on display in MoMA’s Gund Lobby, is difficult to describe due to its complexity.
It is a huge and sophisticated a media wall covering an entire wall of the enclosure. With a size of 7.3 x 7.3 meters, it perfectly simulates a 3D space where shapes, colors and textures in constant movement.
This mesmerizing work of digital art takes place in real timeit is dynamic and it is designed to interact with its environment. The museum explains that the piece is capable of adapt to lightthe movementthe volumes around you and even climate from the city.
unsupervised is composed of 380 thousand imageswhich were taken from 180 thousand pieces of art from the MoMA collection. Thus, he can create endless sequences in fascinating ways that envelop the viewer, since each painting is unique, unrepeatable and fleeting.
On its official site, Anadol explains that unsupervised is part of the collection Machine Hallucinations. It is a project that “explores the aesthetics of data from collective visual memories”, which began in 2016 and is still under development.
Artificial intelligence, art and copyright
The exhibition has revived the debate on the Copyright in digital art. On the one hand, it cannot yet be determined whether a work created with artificial intelligence should be owned by the user, the developers, or even the tool. On the other hand, there is also no clear position regarding the payment of royalties for artists whose works or fragments of them were taken to create digital art.
In this case, unsupervised It is a compendium of works made by various artists, which belong to the institution’s heritage. Despite this, it is not clear who has the intellectual property over them or if someone could claim royalties.
Refik Anadol is the first Turkish artist to have a personal exhibition of NFTs (yes, the piece in a non-fungible token) at MoMa, as announced on social networks. His work has been featured at the tate britain of London, the Georges Pompidou Center of Paris, and the Reina Sofía National Museum of Artin Madrid.
The exhibition unsupervised It opened on November 19 and will be available on the first floor of MoMA until March 5, 2023.
