The metaverse continues to be a central topic of conversation among leaders and decision makers in global industries. For many, the vision of the future of the metaverse is not limited to a gamified version of reality.
At the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2023 in Davos, Switzerland, a group of experts met to discuss the global idea of an industrialized metaverse. With echoes of the industrial revolution, the industrialized metaverse will bring Web3 technologies to sectors that are at stake in everyday life.
The “Deployment in the Industrialized Metaverse” discussion began with Abdullah Alswaha, Minister of Communications and Information Technology of Saudi Arabia, who said that the current reality of digital engagement is not living up to its potential.
“The digital world we live in today is not fit for the 21st century.”
Instead, arguably, it will be better to level current digital communications for situations like telecommuting. Alswaha continued:
“I’m a big proponent of the metaverse that will be the next wave of how immersive experiences work for consumers, businesses, and industry.”
Peggy Johnson, CEO of augmented reality company Magic Leap, said that the industrial metaverse would only come into play when the digital and physical worlds begin to merge:
“That’s when it really comes to life and delivers true productivity in these industrial environments.”
Åsa Tamsons, Ericsson’s Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Business Area, said that This technology is already in play with great use cases in the healthcare, automotive, and consumer electronics industries.
Another example was in retail onboarding:
“Large retail and consumer goods companies are working on how to use this metaverse technology to improve and shorten employee onboarding and training time.”
When explicitly asked about metaverse technology in real-time situations in the healthcare industry, Siemens Healthineers CEO Dr. Bernd Montag said that while there are use cases, healthcare needs more time to catch on. up to date.
He clarified why the healthcare industry could be considered digitally backward.
“It is that you want to have maximum security. You want to have maximum confidence. Sometimes this is more difficult to solve and that is why the adoption does not come with force either ”.
Nevertheless, he did mention that the shift toward increased surgery with 3D is taking place, albeit “very gradually.”
Both Tamsons and Johnson highlighted the need for governments to be involved in launching new technologies within a massive industry.. This comes down to a lot of things, like security and privacy.
And he added that there must be a dividing line between under-regulation and over-regulation.
“I think that’s the right way to bring new technologies. You don’t want to suppress innovation, but you also don’t want to allow it to [ella] come out into the open without the proper restrictions around it.”
At the recent Consumer Electronics Show 2023, A new metaverse technology was shown that could implement touch and smell in digital reality, which has the potential to improve interactions for average and industrial use in the near future.
