“Welcome to Hawthron!” Chef Slowik says to a group of diners, who are waiting appetizingly for a series of unconventional dishes and situations in Menu (The menu). This is the new movie Mark Mylodromantic comedy director Counting my exboyfriends and series like Game of Thrones and the successful Succession. Now he’s back with this film, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult Y Ralph Fienneswhich has been defined as a dark comedy and horror.
What is the movie about Menu?
Official synopsis:
“A couple (Joy and Hoult) travel to a coastal island to eat at an exclusive restaurant, where the chef (Fiennes) has prepared a luxurious menu, with some shocking surprises.”
The Menu It is written by screenwriters Seth Reiss and Will Tracy. To tell the truth, neither the synopsis nor the trailer they relent to reveal (if only a little) the horrors that lurk in that luxurious but mysterious restaurant in Hawthron. What is a fact is that doses of black humor will be at your command.
But thanks to its screening at the 47th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival we can be sure (and calm) that the film bodes well for viewers. At the time of writing this article, Menu It has 87% approval from critics and a total of 38 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics define the film as “deliciously twisted.” Even TIFF programmer Jane Schoettle described it this way:
«[La película] it’s loaded with wild twists that are bolstered by Mylod’s playfully sinister camerawork and inventive intertitles. As this dining fantasy gradually morphs into a culinary nightmare, we get to savor the film’s brilliant and sinister combinations of status and guilt.”
Also notable are the performances by Nicholas Hoult, Anya Taylor-Joy (the soho mystery), but the jewel in the crown is Ralph Fiennes as the sinister Chef Slowik. In an interview with ScreenRantRalph Fiennes described his character as “an unconventional villain […] possessing an underlying feeling of self-loathing while obsessing over perfection.”
Release date
Menu premieres in the United States on November 18, 2022. In Mexico it still has no debut, but it is part of the international premieres of the 20th edition of the Morelia International Film Festival (FICM).
