In recent times, independent horror films are in fashion with a very particular twist: their villains are born from stories popularized among a child audience. We saw it first in Winnie the Pooh: Honey and Bloodand soon with Cinderella’s Curse either The Sleeping Beauty Massacre. Now it’s the Grinch’s turn and it will happen with The Mean One: A Sinister Christmas Carola sinister adaptation of the classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas!by Dr. Seuss.
What is it about The Mean One?
This time, The Grinch will not be content with ruining Christmas by stealing gifts from under the tree, but will also murder everyone who crosses his path. Aesthetically, it is a parody of the film adaptation directed by Ron Howard in 2000.
Dark Side Distribution offers the following official synopsis:
“In ‘Villa Nueva’ a quiet mountain town, young Cindy witnessed the murder of her mother by ‘The Mean One’, a green-skinned bloodthirsty creature dressed in a red Santa Claus suit. Twenty years later, Cindy and her father return to town at the suggestion of Cindy’s therapist. The monster returns to town and begins to terrorize the city by threatening to ruin the vacation, but Cindy finds a new purpose: to catch and kill ‘The Mean One’.
Production team and cast
The film is a title from Sleight of Hand Productions, an independent production company that is just making its way into the industry. Within its catalog there are films like Memory Lane, Bury I Twiceeither Powerpuff Girls: The Long Way Backa peculiar reinvention of The Powerpuff Girls.
The direction will be carried out by Steven LaMorte, same filmmaker of the films mentioned above and produced by Sleight of Hand. The script was written by Finn Kobler and Flip Koble. In interview with Entertainment Weeklythe filmmaker said his desire to transform the Grinch into a nightmare monster is about six or seven years in the making.
“I don’t want to say I’m a legal expert, but I’ve done more than my share of research and consultation just to make sure we’re not denigrating the source material,” LaMorte said. “I love these stories. We want to honor them, of course, but it’s a travesty; It’s supposed to be fun. Every word and script choice was made with the intention of truly sticking to the letter of the law and making sure we are a parody. “We just wanted to put our own spin on it.”

The Mean One It’s that kind of movie that promises plenty of blood and dismemberment. Ideal for horror and gore lovers. The most special thing is that the monster who hates Christmas will be played by David Howard Thorntonthe same interpreter of Art the Clown in the trilogy of Terrifier.
“David is incredible,” adds LaMorte. “Most people know him as Art the Clown from Terrifier and Terrifier 2. Because he is classically trained as a mime and actor, what he brings to a non-verbal character is simply amazing to see. When he came on set, he was The Mean One. There are so many takes where we were like, ‘Do you want to do another take for fun?’ and he says, ‘Every take is fun! What happens if I kill them like this? What happens if I growl? What happens if I laugh?’ He bounces between funny and scary effortlessly, and it’s exciting to watch. He knew we had something special.”
The film completes its cast with Krystle Martin Like Cindy, Chase Mullins like Detective Burke, John Bigham like Doc Zeus, Erik Baker Like Sheriff Hooper, Flip Kobler like Lou and Amy Schumacher like Mayor McBean.
