The main novelty that we find with season 4 of ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ (‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’) can be simply summed up in that its broadcast this year on Amazon Prime Video is weekly. Something that probably helps better to digest a good comedy than, of course, we cannot consider it light.
For the rest, and as was the case with the previous installment, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino has refined enough the circumstances, personalities and other components of the universe of the series to throw for centuries with the adventures of Midge (Rachel Brosnahan). Another thing is that, as spectators, we look for something else.
But well, let’s go to these new episodes. Season 4 begins minutes after Shy’s sit-in with our comedian. A traumatic failure threatens to end both his career and the little money kept by both artist and manager, Susie (Alex Borstein), who has to find a way to pay off her debts.
Return to the starting box
Amy Sherman-Palladino explores quite aptly a return to the starting square in which you do not start from scratch and there is already baggage. The scheme of looking for places to act may remind us of the beginning of the series, but we are aware that the Midge of now and the one of a few years ago is quite different. Just as the situation of the family is different, they return to sleep under the same roof in an apartment.
I’m not going to hide the fact that, having only seen the first two episodes of this new season (those granted to critics), I find it hard to discern what he has in his portfolio the writer of the series for the season, since we have barely scratched the introductory part.
What I can say is that ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ is in a moment as sweet as a pond. The brilliant and poignant dialogues, the dynamics of the characters, the optimism that emanates from this idealized New York of the 60s, continue to be the hallmark of the house. But also a certain feeling of not wanting to give extra incentives to maintain interest.
I already talked, in fact, about that loss of enthusiasm for the series. Although it is still a delight to watch episode by episode and Sherman-Palladino manages to dial in those quick dialogues in absurd situations (there’s a great amusement park scene in this regard), the plot doesn’t seem to live up to the artistic talent or what we’ve seen in previous seasons. .
But even though it’s running out of steam, ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ still a sensational comedywhich has some of the best scripts on the scene and breathes a love for the characters that manages to be transmitted to the viewer.
Ultimately, in this season 4 the series proves what a remarkable comedy it is, aware that it is easy for him to conquer his fans and keep us one more year pending from Midge and family. I think that fiction needs a push to get back to the height where it once was but, for now, it doesn’t come up.
