Yes, on paper the M1 Max could match a PlayStation 5. No, this comparison is not particularly practical.
At the event last Monday, the undisputed star was the MacBook Pro. The community had been waiting for a long time for the new generation of laptops, and that keynote was where we finally received it. And to say that it has met expectations is an understatement, especially when we talk about the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips.
The new chips designed by Apple seem to be, in the absence of putting them to the test, authentic beasts prepared for everything. Not only is it a CPU and GPU that multiply the power of an M1 that has already proven to be amazing, but it is combining with components such as unified memory, which has a scandal bandwidth, which means that they can face each other with the best on the market.
And of course, as soon as its specifications were announced, comparisons began to appear. And, as always, some are luckier than others. For example, there are those who have compared the GPU of the M1 Max with its highest configuration with that of a PlayStation 5 or with an RTX 2080 graphics card. And the truth is that, on paper, it could win.
According Notebookcheck, an M1 Max with 32-core GPU would achieve about 10.4 teraflops of gross power. In comparison, the PS5 would hit 10.29, while an RTX 2080 achieves 10.07 TFLOPS. This, considering the architecture of the M1 Max is incredible, especially in the design of a notebook. However, beyond the numbers, it must be remembered that they are not comparable products, it can simply serve as a reference to give us a minimum idea of what is possible.
On the other hand, we are talking about a MacBook Pro that would have the maximum specifications, not the base model, and it must be taken into account when controlling expectations. In any case, no need to take a console as an example to imagine what they will be capable of. Let’s just take what we’ve already seen with the M1, and prepare because it was only a first glimpse of what is possible.
