They will make a movie starring a young Scar and Mufasa that will tell the events before the story of The Lion King.
The original animated film The Lion King It was released in 1994 with a tremendous success, since it raised more than 1,063 million dollars. The sequel told the love story between the daughter of Simba and the son of Scarwhile the third installment was a revision of the first but from the point of view of Rudder and Pumbaa. Years later, Disney began with live-action adaptations of their classic animated films and released a fully CGI version. The collection was brutal, since it obtained more than 1,656 million dollars in 2019, becoming the eighth highest-grossing feature film in history.
Now, they intend to make a prequel to The Lion King also in CGI that will tell the relationship of Mufasa and Scarr when they were young. Director Jon Favreau will be replaced by Barry Jenkins and has given details about this film in a recent interview.
“I grew up with these characters, they mean a lot to me. I think the work that Jeff Nathanson, the writer, did and come back to really help kids and anyone who loved this property to understand what it takes. Kings are not only born, they are not only made. They have to become who they are through a series of events that many people can relate to. So from that point of view, it fits very well with everything else I’ve done. So I don’t feel pressure, I just want to do a good job.”
“My agents send me a lot of scripts. When this super secret came out, I was very skeptical. I read the script and about 40 pages in I turned to Lulu Wang and said, Shit, this is good. And as I continued reading, I got further away from the side of my brain that said, Oh, a filmmaker like you doesn’t make a movie like this. And I allowed myself to get to the place where these characters and this story is so amazing. The thing that really pushed me to cross the line was James, my DP (director of photography), he said, You know what? There is something really interesting in this way of making films that we have not done and that not many people have done. That’s when I went back to the powers that be and said, ‘I would love to do this, but I have to be able to do what I do.
