We are in Holy Week, and it is time to pack our bags and go to the coast of Tarragona to see the latest comprehensive reform project by interior designer Pia Capdevila. there in Calafellis this single-family home of 250 square meters distributed over three floors, with a garden and pool.
When the interior designer took the project, she found an aesthetically old-fashioned house, which also had a problem of lack of use of space and storage capacity. To transform the house, the client asked the studio for a comprehensive project that would rethink the entire house to improve the aesthetics and functionality of each of the rooms.
The dining room gives priority to views of the garden
On the ground floor is the living-dining room. In the rehabilitation process, the interior designer wanted take advantage of natural light and open the living area to the garden. To achieve this, the first thing the interior designer considered was how to distribute the living room and dining room so that the
Natural light from the outside will bathe both the living room and the dining area and will reach the kitchen, avoiding the feeling of an elongated vanishing point.
In the reform, views towards the garden were prioritized from the dining room and the corner sofa with chaise longue was placed with its back to the outside in order to use the entire linear wall of the floor plan to locate storage furniture in both the living room and the dining room.
The dining table for eight people has been designed by Pia Capdevila. Four diners with chairs sit on two of the sides, while the rest sit on a custom L-shaped bench with interior storage.
A cozy but functional kitchen
For the kitchen, the interior designer opted for a very functional design so that they could work comfortably, but without losing sight of the fact that it had to be a welcoming space so that the family could have a good time together.
The furniture was chosen in sand tones, with white countertops with wooden cladding and with wood both on the floor and in decorative applications. A opening window visually communicates the kitchen with the living-dining roomwhile allowing natural light from that area to be brought into the kitchen.
Guest room and home office
On the ground floor we also find the guest room, which also functions as a small office. In order to convert it into one or the other, Pia Capdevila’s studio decided to install a double folding bed that frees up space when not in use.
the first floor
As the distribution of the first floor fit well with the needs of the family, the interior design studio decided not to modify it structurally, although it did rethink the spaces. As in the rest of the house, the floor was changed for a walnut finish laminate and a complete update of furniture, paint, colors and finishes was made.
The suite was raised with three different zones: the sleeping area, the dressing room and the bathroom. A few meters were removed from the original bathroom and added to the dressing room to gain storage space. Taking into account that the size of the bathroom was reduced, Pia Capdevila chose a timeless decor in gray and cement tones, with a functional cabinet and shower with the right measurements.
In the bathroom they have created a shelfwhich represents an extra area of support in the area of the sink, and which allows you to create decorative gaps.
Regarding the sleeping area, it is divided into two areas by a wall that separates them. On the one hand, it acts as a headboard, and on the other
is a u shaped cabinet which creates a small dressing room. The wall of the suite that runs through the dressing room and the sleeping area was decorated with a liberty flower wallpaper that adds a romantic touch to the bedroom.
For the son’s roomit was decided to decorate it with a childish look on walls, textiles and accessories, but with a very functional furniture design designed so that it could grow with it over the years, being an adaptable design for both childhood, adolescence and even as a room for an adult.
The bed has three levels, with a main bed, several storage drawers and a trundle bed for guests. For the headboard, a custom-made piece of furniture with a large storage capacity was designed in which even the headboard is a chest with a lot of space. The bedroom also has a large wardrobe on one of its walls.
An attic as an office
From the interior design studio they immediately visualized that the attic on the third floor was the right place to install the office that the family needed, since one of the members works from home. to turn it into a functional, cozy room with natural light, the floor was changed for a wooden one like the rest of the house, the ceiling, which was originally made of dark wood, was painted white lacquered to duplicate natural light.
In addition, they added custom office furniture also white lacquered, but with wood applications, and the work spaces were located facing the views so that they could enjoy direct natural light.
the exteriors
For the exterior areas of the house, it was decided to divide the area into zones: a living area, an outside dining area, and an area for bathing and resting around the pool. The pool, located in the center of the garden, takes center stage in the outdoor area.
In addition to repairing it, a set-up was made and a new wooden platform was placed to cover the three projected spaces and thus achieve a common thread. The environments were visually separated with new furniture and planters that also protect the porch from pool water and rain.
Laundry room and parking in the basement
To make the most of the laundry room, located in a narrow room of almost 7 square metres, a gray lacquered wainscot was designed and all the furniture was concentrated on the same wall with tall cabinets up to the ceiling and a lower one for the washing machine, the dryer and a storage closet.
A movable ironing cart with storage space was also added. The enclosure to separate the laundry room from the rest of the floor, where the garage is located, was designed with a black iron structure of panels with transparent glass in which there is a fixed part and a hinged door with a handle, which allows light to pass through.
