After a not very warm reception from the audience and critics, as shown by their respective 41% and 19% on Rotten Tomatoes, HBO announced the cancellation of the idolthe series created by Sam Levinson (Euphoria), Reza Fahim and The Weekend himself.

Viewership dropped to 800,000 viewers for the second episode. Although HBO maintains that the pilot already accumulates 7 million reproductions, the network refuses to share the figure for the rest of the episodes.
the idol follows the story of Jocelyn, a singer who finds herself at a critical point in her career after suffering a nervous breakdown. When she meets Tedros, the owner of a nightclub, her desire to succeed and advance her musical career is mixed with Tedros’s seedy world. Both begin a relationship that could take them to unexpected places and, perhaps, not so beneficial.
According to sources of THR, there was no plan said to have a multi-season story. However, there were options for the series to continue after the five-episode arc we saw. And the decision to go ahead was only made until recently.
