An interesting, and very special, Hyundai Veloster N has been hunted down near the Nürburgring circuit. The high-performance division of the Korean brand is already experimenting with electrification at the highest level, although these spy photos also show that PHEVs are in the target of Hyundai N.
In just a few hours, the first electric sports car of the South Koreans from hyundai nthe new IONIQ 5 N. But it is not the only form of propulsion that the pupils of Albert Biermann are seriously studying, because this mule of the Hyundai Veloster N that has been hunted in one of the service stations near the circuit of Nurburgring has set off the alarms of our photographers in the area.
And it is that one of the great details by which they have noticed is the yellow dot in the upper left corner of the rear window, which betrays an on-board electrified system with a high-voltage battery. And taking a closer look at the spy photos of this Veloster, we can also see other clues: the two covers on the left rear wing, in addition to the sticker on the rear window that indicates in German, “Fahrzeug mit Hochvolttechnik”, which is about a plug-in hybrid test unit.
Spy photos Hyundai Veloster N PHEV
Square for the battery charging port and round for refueling, in place as on the series production model, although the first is provisional despite the fact that it is perfectly integrated into the stamped part, due to a technical incompatibility, which must be keep both sockets separate to avoid producing problems. Even, seen from the front, the larger air intakes on the sides are striking, with an intercooler on the far left, which gives the idea that there is a increased need for cooling.
The test mule also has rear seats, as can be seen through the rear window and headrests, so the high-voltage battery must be under the seats. And if you look at the design on the side you will also realize that the rims that the sports compact mounts are so unprecedented that are not even found in the optional catalog of the model in the United States, with an aerodynamic design and practically closed as in some electric cars.
The Hyundai Veloster N is not offered in Europe, and in the United States it is selling out its last few months. The brand has decided to kill this model from the market on the other side of the Atlantic, although right now it is playing an interesting card that has been discovered: a powerful plug-in hybrid with which the Hyundai N will dodge all the new regulations that increasingly stifle the limits of polluting emissions. In return, this new configuration will allow very powerful powers above 300 hp. We will continue to monitor the course of Hyundai’s tests with this mule and other test units, finding out details of this interesting system.
