Taringa says goodbye almost 20 years after its launch
In a emotional statementthe founders of Taringa reflected their pride in having created a community where freedom of expression prevailed, generating hundreds of thousands of stories, memes and unique moments.
“20 years of history is not an achievement that any site, platform or community can boast of. (…) They can call us virgos, acidic, unbearable, antisocial and whatever they want. But We have made history and no one can ever deny that to us.“, they expressed in a post on their personal profile.
And they added: “The reasons are as simple as they are difficult to accept. With the change in trends in recent years regarding social networks, taringa! designed a product that sought what other platforms could not achieve, a space of freedom where content could be monetized. However, due to market conditions and the competitiveness of social networksthis dream has been frustrated.”
Thus, the decision to close arises in a context in which the world is constantly updated and social networks change depending on the trend that is in fashion. Although they accepted the challenge of modernity, the market and competition were not favorable to them to remain current.
Gone are the days of the early 2000s when Taringa! was positioned as one of the digital platforms most visited in Latin Americabecoming the second most popular social network in Argentina and the third in Latin America between 2013 and 2014, according to comScore.
All in all, and as hundreds of messages say in their farewell post: “Fly high Taringa!”, “Thank you and see you later T!”
The closure of Taringa makes me sad! For some time now I have no longer been part of it, but when I look back I am filled with pride in everything that Taringa! achievement.
