On the occasion of the sequel to The Full Monty on the Disney Plus platform, it is a good time to remember the soundtrack from the original film.
For those who don’t know him, The Full Monty (or All or nothing, as they put it in our country) is a 1997 feature film. Recognized as one of the best UK comedies of the 20th century, it was directed by Peter Cattaneo and starred Robert Carlyle (Gaz), Mark Addy (Dave), William Snape (Nathan), Steve Huison (Lomper), Tom Wilkinson (Gerald), Paul Barber (Barrington “Horse” Mitchell) and Hugo Speer (Guy). It is a film that tells the story of a group of unemployed men from the city of Sheffield, who decide to form a striptease act, so that with that money Gaz (divorced father) can see his son.

It was written by band founders Errol Brown and Tony Wilson who included it as the second single from their second album Hot Chocolate (1975), which reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. Despite its popularity during its launch in the 1970s, it gained recognition within the general public for being part of different soundtracks, such as White of the Eye (1987), Reservoir Dogs (1992), Heavyweights (1995), Boogie Nights (1997), Sex, Shame and Tears (1999), Dogma (1999), Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo (1999), Bicentennial Man (1999), Dude, Where’s My Car (2000), Rat Race (2001), and Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son (2011), among others.
“You Can Leave Your Hat On” – Tom Jones
Randy Newman’s song (before becoming a famous film composer) is part of the Sail Away LP (1972). A production that is more famous for the cover (1986) by Joe Cocker (he also appears in the movie “9 ½ weeks”) than for the original version. For his part, Tom Jones covered it especially for “The Full Monty.”
«Moving on Up» – M People
“Moving On Up” is the second single (and the band’s most popular) from their second album, Elegant Slumming (1993). The song reached number one on the dance music charts in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
“Land of a Thousand Dances” – Wilson Pickett
“Land of a Thousand Dances” (1962) is an original song by R&B singer Chris Kenner; however, it was popularized by Wilson Pickett’s version, who included it in his The Exciting Wilson Pickett (1966) and made it his most important hit.
“Hot Stuff” – Donna Summer
From the seventh studio album Bad Girls (1979), comes this song produced by the duo Pete Bellotte/Giorgio Moroder and released through the mythical Casablanca Records. This song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, leading Summer to receive the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. “We Are Family” – Sister Sledge
“We Are Family” performed by the group Sister Sledge was composed by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers (members of Chic) which belongs to the album of the same name released in 1979. In 2017, it was included in the National Recording Registry. ), from the US Library of Congress.

«Flashdance… What a Feeling» is part of the film Flashdance (1983) with music by Giorgio Moroder and performed by Irene Cara.
Casablanca Records decided to release the single a month before the premiere to promote the film. The unexpected success made his music sell like hot cakes a few days after its release, so it stayed at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for several weeks and climbed to the top of the charts in several countries. It also won the Oscar and the Golden Globe for best original song and Irene Cara won the Grammy for best female pop vocal performance.
Like “We Are Family,” but in 2023, “Flashdance… What a Feeling” was inducted into the US Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry.
