The showrunner of The Flash has stated that the end of the series could come in the last episode of season eight.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, The Flash series showrunner Eric Wallace mentioned that the season eight finale could be the last episode of the show. The executive promises that the end of the current season will be “emotionally intense.” And as it becomes immediately clear: “All this will end in a final that will be a season or a series, depending on whether The CW renews the speedy drama with another cycle.”
After discussing some aspects of what the middle of season eight comprises of, Wallace noted that: “We’re writing the season finale as we speak, and I’m happy to report that everything will be resolved by the end of season 8, so that we can start over and clean up, in case we knock on wood, we can have the privilege of doing a season 9.”

And to an express question about whether or not they are preparing for the closing of the show, he said: “I have known what the end is for years. We’re coming to the end of a three-year master plan that I’ve had with the show in seasons 6, 7 and 8. But the ending itself, I have to write two endings, because I don’t know what the future holds. I know what I expect. I’m very hopeful that there will be a ninth season, but I have to make sure I close all the character arcs depending on which path I take. But I also have to shoot a tag or a teaser that potentially sets up another year. So it’s challenging, but it’s something we love to do as writers. It’s made it even more interesting and more intense, but I think it’s going to be worth it.”
