Any bride who has tried to organize her own wedding knows, it is not easy. There are so many elements to consider that it becomes crazy. Therefore, experts must have hundreds of skills to make an event like a wedding a success. Sylvia Dultzin has been decorating events for 35 yearsso he told us his experience and some secrets for your special event.
Who is Sylvia Dultzin?
Sylvia always liked crafts, at the age of 5 her mother put her in a course, and at the age of 11 she was already teaching 30 other girls about paper mache. Also, weave wicker things. Therefore, Creativity and imagination have been present in his life from a very early age.
When he grew up he studied Architecture, but he got married and did not finish his degree. Then, he revalidated his subjects and graduated as interior decoratorbut he still wouldn’t find his passion in it.
She dedicated herself to painting for 19 years, because she did not like working as a decorator. Until the time came when she had to work. “The truth is that I didn’t know anything about flowers, so nothing,” explains Sylvia Dultzin in an interview. Then, a friend of hers who worked at Foresta, He offered them to become partners to carry out events. That’s where he knew what he wanted to do.
According to Sylvia, they were very lucky, because the first event they organized in their new society was for 1,500 people for the sister of the late president Miguel de la Madrid. From there, the recommendations began and little by little the company grew.
Passion and experience make the difference
Sylvia Dultzin has been decorating events for 35 years, that is, Not only does he focus on the flowers but he takes care of the tablecloths, chairs, tables, in short, everything so that the event shines.
“It is my passion, because it is a very exhausting job. There are times when you don’t sleep for three days, you’re at an event and now run to the other, and the other. But you have to be passionate about what you do to be able to endure.”
When Sylvia started in the industry, there were 13 event decorators in the Mexican Republic, now there are hundreds. Therefore, the competition is obviously fierce. But Sylvia remains strong thanks to what makes her different. “There are more young minds and ideas. Despite everything, I’m still there and they haven’t removed me from my place. I put a lot of effort into pampering the client, I become their friend, I am very detail-oriented. The joke of this is that they can forget about it without worrying about how their event will turn out and I will take care of everything.“comments the specialist.
Although Sylvia considers herself more of an event decorator than just a florist, she illustrates the functions of one. “Nobody comes to ask you for a wedding without flowers. It is a whole, because they ask you for the ceilings, the fabrics, the lighting, the entrance, the walls, a tunnel, chairs of one type or another, but always, always there are flowers.”
However, a florist has to make the design, then count the number of flowers in each arrangement, to know how much it costs, to carry and bring the raw materials, that is, the flowers.
Why are flowers important at an event?
According to Sylvia Dultzin, flowers are relevant because they are the first impact factor when you arrive at a room or venue. “Tall floral arrangements, for my taste, serve that purpose, to create that wow effect! in the guests. Then, people no longer pay attention.”
“The first impact is what stays in your head to say, I don’t even know what there was, but it was impressive.”
On the other hand, If we talk about the creative process, it depends completely on the couple., Dultzin explains that there are those who do not have the slightest idea of what they want. So, they arrive at their offices and shows you photos of its catalog, floral arrangements, chairs, tables, tablecloths, etc. Then they say what they like and what they don’t, and that’s how ideas are formed.
“The truth is that creativity is something very impressive, many times the client even helps you. In other words, the client invents something and from there you go wild with your imagination.”
There are also those who come to Sylvia with ideas from Pinterest or inspiration, and even tell her that they want it just like the one in the image.
“I am prohibited from using the phrase ‘you can’t’. With living rooms, for example, they don’t let you hang, nail, chop, they don’t let you do anything, so you have to figure things out,” says the decorator. “Creativity is something you are born with.”
How to choose wedding flowers
Sylvia explains that To choose the flowers everything will depend on the budget you have., beyond the meaning and the romantic part with which they are associated. “It’s a joke, because there are people who want something mega spectacular and don’t have a budget. So no matter how much you want, how do you do it?” He also comments that Nowadays, raw material prices have risen a lot.and it is a very important factor when choosing flowers for an event or wedding.
“In those cases I prefer to invest more in flowers, because they are what dress up the room.” However, this does not mean having simple arrangements, but Dultzin advises mixing with foliage and other types of plants.
“The low arrangements are nice, but they are more like for breakfast, an intimate dinner, at home. On the other hand, the rooms measure 6 to 9 meters from floor to ceiling, if you put a small one it will not be noticed.”
Another advice that the expert gives us is Opt for seasonal flowers because they will be at a much better price than a specific one. Also if your event is between the months of November to February, the flowers increase up to 400%, because due to the cold the flowers die faster and there is not as much production.
A minimum floral arrangement has to go from 1,800 pesos up. For example, a package of roses normally comes with 24 flowers, which right now costs approximately 250 pesos, but an arrangement takes many more, now do the math. Another example is the small orchid, the package contains 10 and costs 600 pesos. So, Sylvia also recommends mixing with silk flowers.
