Skoda has launched all its machinery with the aim of developing a new and important electric car. The Czech manufacturer will make the 100% electric Skoda Octavia a reality. A model that will be positioned in the market as a direct alternative to the Tesla Model 3.
Skoda will offer in its range a 100% electric alternative to the Octavia that we can currently find at dealerships. The Czech manufacturer will not only bet on SUVs in its particular process of changing to the electric car. Other body styles will be available. The idea of seeing in the market an electric Skoda Octavia it is not something new. There has been speculation for a long time about the electrification at the highest level of one of the best-selling general sedans.
New information shows that Skoda has already launched all its machinery to materialize an electric vehicle that has, among other objectives, power rival the Tesla Model 3. Development has started and this new model should be ready before the end of this decade. It is one of the most important launches of the roadmap recently established by the brand.
An electric Skoda Octavia without Volkswagen’s MEB platform?
Taking into account that the electric Octavia will not see the light of day in the short term, it is very possible that it is not supported by the MEB platform of the Volkswagen Group. An architecture currently used by all Skoda electric cars. So which platform will you use? All eyes are on the future SSP architecture. A platform also signed by the Volkswagen Group and that will be ready somewhere in 2025. It is not ruled out that the Octavia will become one of the first electric cars to use it.
In terms of design, it will be quite far from the current Octavia. It will be developed on the new Modern Solid design language. A philosophy that will provide robustness to the exterior. Now, being an electric vehicle, all eyes will be on the propulsion system. The future Skoda Octavia EV will be equipped with an improved version of the 89 kWh battery used by the Czech company.
The autonomy of the electric Octavia will exceed the barrier of 600 kilometers and will support charging powers of up to 200 kW. The possibility of offering more sporty and radical versions is also on the table. That is, a hypothetical electric Octavia RS.
The electric Skoda Octavia will not end with the thermal versions
Klaus Zellmer, CEO of Skoda, recently commented that all options are being investigated to have an electric Octavia on the market before the ban on gasoline and diesel cars in Europe materializes. By 2030, the company expects 70% of its profits to come directly from the sale of electric vehicles. That is why it is urgent to increase its offer.
The top leader of Skoda also opened the door for a thermal and electric model to coexist for a certain period of time.. Therefore, the arrival of an electric Octavia will not mean, a priori, the instant death of the thermal versions. Zellmer assures that everything will depend on the demand that continues to exist in certain regions: “The Octavia is a fantastic car that, of course, we will have to keep in the family as long as we can since we have such a large customer base.”
On the other hand, and directly linked to the previous point, it is clear that the company is considering separate developments. Even more so when the fully electric Octavia will be supported by a dedicated platform.
Release date of the new electric Skoda Octavia
At this point, it is worth asking when the launch of the electric Octavia will take place. Before this happens, Skoda will update the Octavia range with thermal engines and plug-in hybrids. A renewal that will be ready to storm dealerships at some point in 2024. Therefore, we can set the arrival date of the electric Octavia from 2025.
The zero-emission Octavia will put the finishing touch to the three electric models that the company is currently working on. Recall that there will be a production version of the Skoda Vision 7S Concept and a small SUV will also be introduced that will replace the fireproof Fabia. All these novelties must be ready for 2026.
