As stated in the introduction to the soap opera starring Moe in the ‘Pigmoelion’ episode of ‘The Simpsons’, the theme of Will Smith’s slap in the face of Chris Rock at the Oscars it is “like cleaning a house: it never ends”. After the reactions of Jim Carrey and Wanda Skyes, after the affected person has manifested himself for the first time and after the Academy has put a series of measures on the table, our Pedro Almodovar He has given his opinion on the matter.
neither devil nor devil
“What I saw and what I heard gives me a feeling of absolute rejection”. This is how the director from La Mancha analyzed in ElDiario what, without a doubt, is one of the most infamous moments in the history of the awards. Besides, he has not missed the opportunity to describe the acceptance speech of the Oscar for best actor received by Smith as “A speech that seemed more like that of a preacher. The family is not defended or protected with hosts, and no, the devil does not take advantage of the climactic moments to make his own”.
The latter refers to the words with which Denzel Washington tried to appease Will Smith after assault: “At your highest, be careful. That’s when the devil comes for you”. Almodóvar qualified his vision of the incident and the reaction of many commentators on social networks in this way:
“The devil, in fact, does not exist. It is a fundamentalist speech that we should not have heard or seen. Some appreciate that it was the only real moment of the ceremony, they refer to that monster without a face that is social networks. For them, avid of carrion, was without a doubt the great moment of the night”.
Let us remember that, beyond all this, Pedro Almodóvar attended the 94th Oscar award ceremony on behalf of ‘Parallel Mothers’, which opted for the precious statuette in the categories of best soundtrack —Alberto Iglesias— and best actress – Penelope Cruz. And it is that, deep down, what really matters is the cinema —although the data shows that the salseo pulls more than a good feature film—, and this is how the director defends it:
“I refuse to let that episode mark the gala and be the protagonist of a ceremony where many more things happened and of much greater interest. Drive My Car won, for me, without discussion the best film of the year. And also the documentary Summer of Soul, my favourite.”
