Don’t Miss: The Definitive Collection of Marvel Graphic Novels
Jim Shooter, Mike Zeck and Bob Layton were the architects of Secret Wars, one of Marvel’s most remembered stories. Where heroes and villains were kidnapped by a being called The Beyonder, to be faced on a planet called Battleworld.
Secret Wars began as a story that accompanied the launch of a toy line. But it became the event that marked a watershed for La Casa de las Ideas.
That is why some details make Secret Wars a Marvel classic that every comic book fan should read.
An unprecedented crossover
More than 40 characters take part in this story that dared to go where previous proposals had crashed, the creation of the largest crossover in Marvel history.
This union of characters did not follow the classic combat between good and evil, Jim Shooter manages to combine the particular story of each hero and allows us to see alliances and unimaginable ties in favor of survival.
The toys that opened the story
The idea of Secret Wars was not born derived from the need to increase sales of comics, the main objective was to accompany a line of action figures, which led to one of the most ambitious stories of all time.
The most famous toy company in the world looked to Marvel, to face its competition (another famous brand that begins with the letter K) and Jim Shooter proposed to the toy company that the line they would launch together would be the complement of a ambitious story, which would bring new readers to the Marvel Universe.
Symbiotes
Since the 90s Venom and Carnage have seen their popularity grow thanks to the exploits they have had both on the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man, as well as in stories like Venom vs Carnage or Absolute Carnage.
Without Secret Wars, the history of the Klyntar would not be understood, who made their debut in this story, where they join Spider-Man, in one of the most interesting trips in their history of almost six decades in Marvel.
Art
One of the details that make the Secret Wars memorable is the art of Mick Zeck, whose simple and clean strokes gave the characters of La Casa de las Ideas their unbreakable essence since the 1960s.
Zeck was in charge of bringing the ideas emanating from Jim Shooter’s script to the vignettes. In a work whose consequences are still lived in Marvel, almost 40 years after its publication.
A war that inspired an era
Secret Wars was such a large event that the Distinguished Competition sought to hold a similar event, resulting in Crisis on Infinite Earths, led by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez.
There is no doubt that the decade of the 80s gave us two of the most important events in the history of the two largest comic book publishers in the world, something that would not have happened if Jim Shooter did not think of proposing Secret Wars.
Don’t hesitate any longer and get Secret Wars, the 26th volume of The Definitive Collection of Marvel Graphic Novels.
