The Nissan Maxima is the new victim of the hunt that generalist sedans are suffering. Nissan has announced that production of the Maxima will cease in mid-2023. When the available stock runs out, the farewell of a sedan with more than 40 years of history behind it will materialize.
These are not good times for mainstream brand sedans. Supply continues to shrink at a fast pace. And it is not only an issue that especially affects Europe. Far from our borders, in the United States, a similar situation is being experienced. Manufacturers continue to redouble their efforts in SUV-type vehicles and, above all, in electrification.
The Nissan Maxima is the latest victim of the hunt that sedans are suffering. Sadly it’s the end for one of Nissan’s most important models in North America. The brand itself has communicated to different specialized media that the production of the Maxima will end in the middle of next year. And once the stock is exhausted, the farewell of this sedan will materialize.
Nissan directs all its resources to electrification
A company spokesperson has pointed out that, as part of the Ambition 2030 strategic plan, priority is being given to electric vehicles and advanced technologies with the aim of achieving the established goal. In the year 2030, 40% of the sales of nissan must correspond to 100% electric or hybrid vehicles. The Maxima has no place on this roadmap.
Information about the death of the Maxima had been circulating for some time. Finally it has been Nissan who has confirmed that its production will end in mid-2023. And there is no new generation on the agenda. Now, we cannot rule out that in the not too distant future a totally new (and predictably electric) model will take its place. And even that the commercial name Maxima be rescued.
The current generation of the Maxima debuted in 2015 and in 2018 it underwent a major overhaul. A facelift. Taking into account the time that has passed, for next year, or at the latest 2024, a new generation should see the light. Moreover, if the renewal of the Maxima had been given the green light, the company would have to be working at full capacity in development. Something that will not happen.
The Nissan Maxima has lost a lot of ground
It is not a specific matter of the Maxima, an important part of the large sedans have seen their market share decrease in recent years. In the First half of 2022 sales of the Maxima in the United States have accumulated only 3,753 unitswhich represents a fall of 62% compared to the same period of the previous year.
With these sales figures and the rumors that have been circulating on the net for a long time, nobody should be surprised by the decision made by Nissan.
