As is tradition, every year the Fiestas de la Villa de Álvarez are celebrated in Colima and this 2023 commemorates the 166th edition of this event; for which, the Plaza de Toros La Petatera is built completely by hand.
This square is considered an artistic monument of the nation and intangible cultural heritage of Mexico, since it has been built every year since 1857 with sticks, rope and petates; mounting a colossal structure of five thousand square meters with capacity for more than five thousand people.
The construction of the enclosure is a tradition that begins with the drawing in lime of the points where the trunks that will support the structure will be nailed and that reaches approximately 64 meters in diameter.
This work remains standing during religious and pagan festivals in honor of San Felipe de Jesús, Patron Saint of Colima; and its main attraction is the traditional bullfight.
Likewise, on Tuesday, February 21, at 5:00 p.m. the maximum figure of the rejoneo will be presented, the Portuguese Diego Ventura. He is accompanied by Leo Valadez and Arturo Gilio, who will fight two bulls from Marrón and four bulls from Boquilla del Carmen.
