Mario Moreno “Cantinflas” will revive as a brand 30 years after his death. From a tequila and a beer, to a wide range of snacks, they will carry his image as part of the tribute that the widow of his son and the government of Mexico City are organizing as a tribute.
Tita Marbez, widow of Mario Moreno Ivanova, son of Cantinflas, signed an agreement with the Government of CDMX to install a “physical” museum that will offer the general public more than 1,500 pieces that were owned by the Mexican actor.
Also, there will be a museum in the metaverse especially dedicated to Mario Moreno Cantinflas 30 years after his death on April 20, 2023.
Marbez was appointed by Mario Moreno Ivanova (adopted son of the actor) as the universal heiress of Cantinflas, which includes the Cantinflas registered trademark and the possibility of promoting licenses linked to the comedian and the protection of collection pieces that still exist.
There are already pieces of that collection uploaded to the virtual world. In this case, the development was done with contributions from private companies that were key to cover the expenses with the aim of making access free.
The “physical” museum will be carried out with the support of the CDMX government. The idea is that it be established in some Cantinflas properties and that the pieces are exhibited for free and are under the care of Marbez.
The widow of the actor’s son said that “Cantinflas things do not belong to anyone, but to the Mexican people and we want them all to be available to the people.”
The Cantinflas films, as explained by Marbez, were delivered by the actor himself to Columbia since no one in the family was a distributor.
The royalties are shared between the distribution company and the heirs of Eduardo Moreno Laparade.
Moreno Laparade, creator of the “Mario E. Moreno AC Moreno Cantinflas” Foundation, was in a long legal dispute with Moreno Ivanova.
In his film history, Cantinflas had at least 39 very successful films that to date are broadcast on open and pay television, which still generates royalties.
The Cantinflas brand tequila, beer and snacks, which will be licensed to a company, will have the image of the actor, not a caricature, in line with federal guidelines not to use animated characters.
Marbez said about this: “I don’t get involved in the production of these products, they know how to sell; we are only going to approve the design”.
In beverages, there is a single precedent.
More than 10 years ago, a commemorative tequila was launched under the Cantinflas brand that was produced among friends.
Mario Moreno was and continues to be one of the most influential characters in Mexican popular culture and in the Spanish language.
Although he was successful in other countries where his works were presented, he did not have as much impact because the chants were difficult to translate and because, finally, his character was a reflection of the society of many Latin American peoples.
