There are many health problems that exist around the world. Although some receive less attention than others it does not mean that they should be neglected. One of the most worrying cases is precisely that related to the amoeba Naegleria Fowleri, also known as “brain eater” for the consequences it causes in patients. Although it is rare, when it occurs it has a high mortality rate.
After months without notification of cases, one has now been released in the United States and it had fatal consequences. It all started in Texas where a five-year-old boy was hospitalized for meningoencephalitis. Unfortunately, after a couple of days in the hospital he passed away.
What happened?
Based on the medical report, the minor was affected with the amoeba “brain eater” and that caused the brain infection. While doing a detailed analysis of the case it was detected that the contagion could have occurred within a water park where the boy went along with his family.
Therefore, an investigation into the water samples from said attraction was immediately initiated. If it is contaminated, it is feared that more cases could occur and that would cause consequences of great magnitude.
Mode of transmission and symptoms
In accordance with Mayo Clinic Naegleria Fowleri infection is caused by an amoeba that usually inhabits warm and fresh water lakes, rivers, and hot springs. Exposure to this amoeba usually occurs during swimming or water sports, as has been alleged to have occurred in infants.
While it is also known colloquially as “brain eater” because that is where it causes serious damage. Most people with a Naegleria infection die from meningoencephalitis within the week after they develop symptoms.
Although it is estimated that millions of people around the world are exposed to this amoeba every year, only a few get sick. The biggest mystery that persists today is why some get the infection and others don’t.
