If last January we lamented the poor inauguration of the ticket office of 2022, which fell drastically compared to the month of December 2021, feeding on remnants such as ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ or ‘Sing 2!’, the February data did not bring better news; and it is that, during their 28 days, they were unable to resume flight despite the boost given by ‘Uncharted’.
In this way, the second month of the year closed with 3.76 million viewers, leaving a total of 23.87 million euros at the box office collected; figures slightly lower than those of the previous year, which closed with 4.03 million attendees and 26 million euros amassed in its 31 days, but which leave a 744% growth compared to February 2021.
News at half gas
The Top 5 with the most watched of the month does not leave too many surprises, being crowned by the two most powerful releases of the month —premiered on the second and third weekend respectively—. These are ‘Uncharted’, which managed to get hold of some estimable €7.87 millionand a ‘Death on the Nile’ that reaped 1.88 million in the 10 days it was on the bill.
It is when we reach the third position when we realize the poor state of the box office, when we meet ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. The Marvel movie closed February with €1.58 million after remaining since December 16 anchored to the first positions of the box office, being technically tied with a ‘Sing 2!’ who pocketed 1.48 million. ‘Belfast’, meanwhile, closed the top of the table with 1.26 million.
Regarding the market share by distributors, Sony was the big winner of the month, taking a whopping 44.7% of the pie with a premiered title —’Uncharted’— and ten projected, opening a large gap with its immediate pursuers; some Universal and Walt Disney that conquered 17% and 14.30% of the quota respectively driven by ‘Sing 2!’ and ‘Death on the Nile’.
A promising March
Luckily, it seems that the month of March that we have just started is going to break the losing streak at the beginning of 2022 thanks, in large part, to the premiere of ‘The Batman’. And it is that the Matt Reeves film has not only swept the international box office with a total of 248.5 million dollars; as well It has become the best premiere of the year in Spain with a total of 3.4 million euros raised over the weekend.
Although, except for occasional surprises that feature films like ‘The bad guys’, ‘Jackass Forever’ or, hopefully, ‘Malnazidos’everything seems that the possible blockbuster at the end of the quarter will be reduced to a single media title.
