Although for weeks it was warned that it was impossible to contain the pandemic and that has led to outbreaks in various countries. In the case of Mexico, there is already a third wave of Covid-19 that threatens to be even more harmful than the previous two. On the one hand, it is influenced by the fact that a large part of the population no longer follows the indications for protection and hygiene. Although it has also been caused by the expansion of the Delta Variant.
One of the clearest signs is that in recent days, record numbers of more than 19,000 new cases per day have been reached. Although the biggest difference from previous outbreaks is that the mortality rate remains low. One of the explanations is that it is a consequence of the application of the vaccine because it avoids developing serious pictures of the disease.
Now, although now there are not so many deaths, the problem is that the infected are on the rise. According to the Ministry of Health (SSa) there are currently 131 thousand 632 active cases throughout the national territory. Is about the figure is the highest since the start of the pandemic and it is almost twice that recorded during the peak of the first wave.
Risk of hospital collapse
On the other hand, a further repercussion can be seen in the increase in hospital occupancy. It increases every day and that implies more work for the medical personnel who work in hospitals and dedicate themselves to saving lives.
For its part, based on what was published by Reform there are already five states where the third wave has caused an occupancy greater than 70 percent. Therefore, they are the ones that are closest to suffering a saturation like the one that occurred at the beginning of this 2021.
- Colima – 84.90%.
- Mexico City – 75.62%.
- Warrior – 73.24%.
- Nayarit – 72.82%.
- Durango – 71.92%.
Although that is not all because nine other states maintain an occupancy that varies between 50 and 70 percent. With this, it can be seen that the short-term outlook does not look encouraging. If the trend continues, it is quite likely that if a patient needs care, he will have to visit several hospitals until he finds one with a bed available.
While another aspect to consider is that the upcoming summer holidays could make the third wave even worse. If the population decides to go on a trip without sufficient protection and hygiene measures, massive outbreaks can be caused.
