An all-new MacBook battery seems to have made its way into regulatory databases this month. While the filings are not detailed with the Chinese Certificate Database and UL Demko Certification, they reveal what appears to be a MacBook with model number A2389 and a 4380mAh battery. The first laptop under ARM?
The MacBook Air or classic underarm approach
As the listed battery voltage indicates, this is not a component for an iPad but rather a new MacBook.
The 4380mAh battery listed in this folder is relatively small and could match the MacBook Air. For example, the 16-inch MacBook Pro has a battery over 8,000 mAh. The 13-inch MacBook Air has an approximately 5,100 mAh battery. The power indicated here is also interesting. The filings indicate that the Mac in question is powered by a 49.9 watt-hour battery, which is exactly the same as the 13-inch MacBook Air of 2020.
With all of that in mind, it seems clear that this battery is likely headed for a MacBook Air or even a 12-inch MacBook revival stopped last year. Apple is on the verge of switching to Apple Silicon processors, and we expect the next MacBook Air or MacBook to be powered by Apple’s custom processors rather than Intel’s. Apple has announced that the first computer running Apple Silicon will be released later this year.
Apple Silicon Macs are expected to be much more energy-efficient than Intel Macs. If these regulatory filings are tied to a Mac with an ARM chip, the battery life would likely be much longer than current Macs given the efficiency of Apple Silicon already seen on iPhone and iPad these last years.
It remains to be seen which Mac will be the first to switch to Apple Silicon. The anonymous Twitter account @ L0vetodream previously suggested that Apple would relaunch the 12-inch MacBook as part of the Apple Silicon transition. Meanwhile, Apple’s favorite analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said the 13-inch MacBook Pro and a new 24-inch iMac will be Apple’s first Mac Silicon.
