In August 2021, sales of plug-in hybrid cars in Spain reported a total of 2,698 units, which represents a strong growth of 101.95% compared to the same period of the previous year. The Peugeot 3008 Hybrid was the best-selling plug-in hybrid in a month in which the CUPRA Formentor climbed positions.
The plug-in hybrid car sales in Spain have closed the month of August 2021 with 2,698 units traded. A volume of registrations that, if compared with the result obtained in the same period of the previous year, represents a 101.95% growth. The plug-in hybrid car is gaining ground and currently has a 4.72% market share. Practically double that of the 100% electric car.
Regarding the accumulated period, the data is much better. And it is that, between the months of January and August, new plug-in hybrid car registrations reached 25,909 units, 178.02% more compared to 2020. Almost all plug-in hybrids were passenger cars. 2,693 plug-in hybrid passenger cars were sold in August, 101.87% more than in 2020. And during the first eight months, 25,851 passenger cars were accumulated, 178.33% more than last year.

At this point, we should take a look at the ranking of the 10 best-selling plug-in hybrid cars in Spain during August. What have been the most outstanding models? The victory is for the Peugeot 3008, which remains at the top and continues to lead a category that is gaining ground every month. The CUPRA Formentor was second. The CUPRA model continues to climb positions.
Closing the podium, in third place, we have the Citroën C5 Aircross, which returns to the top of the table with a great performance. At the doors of the podium, with just a few units apart, is the KIA XCeed, one of the most popular plug-in hybrids in the C segment and, especially, among generalist firms. The new Hyundai Tucson was fifth and continues to improve.
The Renault Mégane (8th) sees increased popularity. The arrival of the five-door hatchback body variant in its range has been decisive in boosting its sales. More than half of the models listed in this Top 10 belong to generalist brands, which shows that something is changing in the plug-in hybrid vehicle market.
