According to a latest report from Variety, Judge Charlaine Olmedo received letters from more than 50 people expressing their support for actor Danny Masterson, convicted of two counts of rape and sentenced to 30 years in prison for such crimes. The letters were sent before the judge handed down the sentence this week in Los Angeles County.
Among the senders were married couples Ashton Kutcher and Mila KunisMasterson’s co-stars on the popular sitcom That ’70s Show (1998-2006), who in their letters asked for a lesser sentence for their colleague.
In the specific case of Kutcher, he wrote that Masterson “has always treated people with decency, equality and generosity.” He told an anecdote in which he claimed to have witnessed how her partner defended an unknown girl in a pizzeria, whose boyfriend was mistreating her. On the other hand, he was full of praise for his professionalism.
“Danny takes his job very seriously. He is kind, courteous and very hardworking. He treats everyone as equal, from the assistants to the operators, including the actors and the catering staff. As a role model, Danny has always been excellent,” he stressed.
In May of this year, the jury found Masterson guilty of raping two women in 2003. However, seeking to persuade the judge to give him a minimum sentence, Kutcher opined in his letter that the declared attacker no longer posed a danger to the public. society, and that on the other hand, it would be a “tertiary injustice” to deny her daughter the presence of her father.
For her part, Kunis recalled meeting Masterson directly on the set of That ’70s Show. Her “caring nature,” she said, was instrumental to the actress’s personal and professional growth, being someone who—in her eyes—genuinely cares about others and leads by example.
