US electric vehicle maker Tesla has opened a new subsidiary in China just days after announcing it will build a new factory for energy storage batteriesreported today the official newspaper Global Times.
The new subsidiary has a capital of 2 million dollars and will focus on “technical support, development of basic artificial intelligence software, solar power generation technology, energy storage technical service, and research and development of motors and their control systems and parts for automobiles,” according to data from the Tianyancha corporate information platform.

The state newspaper does not clarify if this subsidiary is related to the new factory, but highlights Tesla’s expansion in China, where its Shanghai ‘gigafactory’ produced more than 710,000 vehicles in 2022, more than half of the company’s sales to global level.
This Monday, the automaker announced the construction of a factory in Shanghai where it will produce its “Megapack”some energy storage batteries used to stabilize electrical networks and avoid supply outages that it already manufactured in a plant in California (USA).
These new facilities, from which some 10,000 units a year will come out, are expected to start operating in the second quarter of 2024.
