Tesla has decided to give priority to the production of batteries for electric cars in Texas (United States). Battery manufacturing in Germany has taken a backseat and will be launched later. Tax incentives have tipped the balance.
Tesla has made an important decision that directly affects the automotive industry in Europe. The popular brand of electric cars has opted for prioritize battery manufacturing in Texas (USA). A decision that is supported by the fiscal measures promoted by the government led by Joe Biden. But, how does it harm Europe that Tesla produces batteries in American territory? The spotlight is on Germany.
The company has temporarily stopped its plans to start up a battery factory in Germany. Facilities that were going to have a production capacity of 50 GWh and would be located next to the vehicle production center where, let us remember, the successful Tesla Model Y is already being manufactured. The Tesla Gigafactory in Germany is called to play a leading role in the expansion of the brand throughout the Old Continent.
Tesla will increase its battery production capacity in the United States
In view of the tax incentives that will be offered to automakers that produce electric vehicle components, such as batteries, in North America, Tesla will target its US facilities. In the spotlight is the Gigafactory in Austin, Texas. The battery production capacity in said factory will be increased ahead of schedule.
As has been previously pointed out, this decision does not mean that the plans to manufacture batteries in Germany have been definitively cancelled. Moreover, this new information that has come to light in the last few hours indicates that the Berlin Gigafactory will play an active role in the improvement of the Austin plant.
The specialized medium autonews
highlights that the expansion of battery production capacity in Austin will be possible for the engineering team working in Berlin and even for components made in Germany.
Arne Cristiani, Mayor of Grünheide, has assured in recent statements that Tesla’s plans to open a battery factory in Germany have not been canceled and that the project is still underway: “The plant is still being built.”
