Jonathan Mostow, director of Terminator 3, reveals what Terminator 2 meant for the history of science fiction cinema.
30 years have passed since it was released Terminator 2 (1991) and the film still remains a rare sci-fi gem. In fact, the premiere in Ultra 4K, shows that it is at the level of today’s cinema. That is why it has marked so many directors and viewers in general throughout these 3 decades.
Now Jonathan Mostow, Director of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), has reflected on the history of the franchise and the influence of Terminator 2.
“I really enjoyed making Terminator 3… Terminator 2 was such an innovative and pivotal film. It was the first time that audiences actually saw digital and rendered effects in a way that left their jaws on the ground. They couldn’t believe what they were seeing. You can only dazzle people like that once. It was very difficult, be it Terminator or any other movie, to find the visual effects that could match the dazzling spectacle of Terminator 2. When I made mine, I made it as a fan of the first two movies trying to make the movie I wanted to see. It has been interesting to subsequently see different filmmakers, different producers and even different casts come and reincarnate the film and extend the franchise. I have not really been involved with the later films. I was involved in the development of the Terminator 4 script, but chose to do something else and directed a different movie instead. I have sat down like the rest of the world and just watched the franchise continue. “
What is the future of the saga?
As well mentioned Jonathan Mostow, after his film came others that have never reached the level of Terminator 2, so the saga is in clear decline. So we will have to wait for James Cameron I finished with the aftermath of Avatar and decide to retake the franchise led by Sarah connor and his son John Connor, so you have a bright future.
