- It is estimated that in Mexico there are between 20 and 23 cases of brain tumors per year for every 100,000 inhabitants.
- Most cases occur in people between the ages of 45 and 55.
- Although it is of low incidence, this type of neoplasia is more deadly than that of the mother and that of the lung.
One of the objectives of private health is to make available to the population the most innovative equipment and tests of the moment. At the same time, it is a complement to the public sector and together they meet the goal of serving the largest possible number of people. With this in mind, TecSalud announced the inauguration of its first Brain Tumor Center in Mexico.
First of all, cancer keeps on increasing all over the planet. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) it is responsible for almost 10 million deaths per year. While the number is constantly increasing.
Brain cancer is low incidence but high mortality
One of the characteristics of neoplasms is that they can develop anywhere in the body. In this regard, it is estimated that In Mexico there are between 20 and 23 cases per year of brain tumors for every 100,000 inhabitants. While the highest incidence occurs in people between 45 and 55 years.
One point to note is that despite its low incidence, this type of cancer is more deadly than breast cancer or lung cancer. Therefore, their attention and accompaniment becomes essential.
All of the above led to TecSalud to innovate and offer an alternative to support the affected population and the result is their first Brain Tumor Center in the country. Its inauguration occurred within the activities of the 2nd Symposium “News in Neurology and Neurosurgery”.
What are their characteristics?
This new space seeks to diagnose and provide adequate and timely treatment to improve the quality of life and survival in patients with brain tumors. It is distinguished by having a multidisciplinary team made up of neurosurgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, among other specialists who analyze and plan specialized treatment for each patient through sessions called “tumor board”.
In this regard, the Dr. Guillermo Torre, Rector of TecSalud and Vice President of Research at Tecnológico de Monterrey, commented that the objective is to create a community service strategy. In this sense, this Brain Tumor Center focuses on collaborative work and the sum of multidisciplinary efforts to put the patient at the center of all decisions.
This center is also distinguished by the involvement of our students and researchers to generate new treatment technologies.
It will also offer the highest state-of-the-art technology, comparable to that of international centers. From a robotic visualization system that improves precision and reduces operating time by 50 percent to follow-up care in patients through radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
the neurosurgeon Enrique Caro OsorioAssociate Director of the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery and director of the Brain Tumor Center, highlighted during the inauguration that work is now beginning with a new approach that looks after the patient and seeks the best practices.
“With this Center we seek to have an impact at a regional and national level to increase the number of current care and generate more experience that translates into results for the benefit of patients.”
Where is it?
The new Brain Tumor Center is now open and is located on the eighth floor of the TecSalud Zambrano Hellion Hospital in Nuevo León.
For its part, it is currently estimated that in Monterrey and its metropolitan area, the private sector treats approximately 150 cases of brain tumors per year. Of these, almost a third are cared for by TecSalud. With this Brain Tumor Center, the Tec de Monterrey health system seeks to expand its specialized care in the region and in the north of the country.
