The beginning of the end of the road has arrived. After controversies, an uncertain future after the pandemic, and some disappointment over the previous film in the saga, fast and furious 10 finally debuted at the global box office. And although the numbers seem exorbitant, it seems that not all will be good news in the long term. Will we be facing the second failure of the saga?
In the United States and Canada, the new adventure of Toretto and his “family” debuted with $67.5 million dollars (MDD) in its first weekend. Curiously, it is the same figure with which Black Adam disappointed at the box office in October 2022. If the debut in that territory shows us anything, it is that the saga is losing ground with each installment. The premiere of fast and furious 10 is below the $70 million that the previous installment achieved, even in a pandemic and cinemas with capacity restrictions. Where does the 10th movie rank compared to the other movies in the series?
- Fast and furious 7 – $147.2 million
- fast and furious 8 – $98.8
- Fast and furious 6 – $97.4
- fast and furious 5in control – $86.2
- fast and furious 4 – $71
- fast and furious 9 – $70
- fast and furious 10 – $67.5
- Fast and Furious: Hobbs & Shaw – $60
- faster more furious – $50.5
- Fast and furious – $40.1
- Fast and Furious: Tokyo Challenge – $24
If we take the trajectory of its predecessor as a reference, fast and furious 10 he could end his run with $160-165 million. It doesn’t help that it received a B- CinemaScore (same grade as the 9th installment), and that it will face competition from various genres in the coming weeks. Fortunately, the situation improved outside of North America.
And the worldwide box office?
Internationally, the film grossed $251.4 million from 84 markets in its first 5 days (debuted in some territories from Wednesday), for a global cumulative of $319. Its about second best world premiere of the yearonly behind Super Mario Bros: The Movieand of the third best opening of the saga. However, it is a far cry from the $541.9 of fast and furious 8and of the $397.6 of Fast and furious 7.
China led the global box office with $78 million accumulated since last Wednesday. And although it is the best Hollywood debut of 2023, it is 40% behind the premiere of the call F9. Mexico contributed $16.7 (more than $290 million pesos), and by the way, established the following brands:
- 2nd best opening of the saga (behind the $327 million pesos of the seventh film).
- 5th best opening in the history of Universal.
- 2nd best debut of 2023 (behind Super Mario Bros: The Movie).
- 5th best debut since the pandemic began.
Other prominent territories were France, Brazil, and India. Looking ahead, it seems that fast and furious 10 it will have no problem exceeding $800 million worldwide, just above the $726 of the previous film. Taking into account what it cost $340and that the studios only obtain 25% of what is collected in China, such numbers, which many films would envy, may not be enough to generate profit for your study. If so, we would be facing the second film in the saga that generates losses (tokyo challenge It was the first one).
Did you guys contribute to the Toretto, Lety and Dante Reyes numbers or do you think the franchise is already too implausible to be worth the price of the ticket?
Juan Jose Cruz I am one of those who always defended Robert Pattinson as Batman and can see the same movie in the theater up to 7 times. My guilty pleasure? Low budget horror movie.
