By 2022, it was recorded that more than one billion people in the world suffer from some type of psychological disorder.
It is predicted that by 2030 mental health will be the leading cause of disability in the world.
Data from 2020 revealed that depression and anxiety already cost the world economy close to a trillion dollars.
Currently, mental health in the population is an important issue for everyone, especially in the workplace, where companies feel more interested in the well-being of their employees. A new study detailed that in 2023 eight out of 10 working men are affected by stress, depression and anxiety.
Although it has been a health problem in the past, today mental health is a subject that is discussed without taboo throughout the world, especially among the new generations.
According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 300 million people in the world suffer from depression, and one in four people will suffer from a mental problem throughout their lives.
In this sense, and according to records from 2021, after the Covid-19 pandemic, many people have reflected more depression and anxiety, which already cost the world economy close to a trillion dollars due to loss of productivity prior to the coronavirus.
And according to the same source, in the first year of the health emergency these conditions grew by 25 percent, which is why prevention is the current challenge for governments and organizations, because they are a risk that companies must monitor.
For its part, in Mexico, according to the 2020 census, carried out by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), throughout the national territory there are 1,590,583 people with some mental problem or condition.
The study
An investigation signed by Cuéntame, due to the International Men’s Health Week, which this year is celebrated from June 12 to 18, revealed the alarming numbers that mental health registers in working men.
Given this, according to the startup that promotes the mental health of employees in Latin America, it called for actions to improve their psychological well-being, including men, who suffer from depression and anxiety, which affect 8 out of 10 workers. .
The data collected by this source in the therapies provided from 2019 to date, revealed that 43.5 percent have been taken by men; of which 47.7 percent were treated for anxiety, 18.7 percent for depression, and 11.6 percent for stress, among others.
In general, the research added that 42.7 percent of the employees of companies that access the mental health platform are men. “Although the percentage does not vary much compared to women, it is still a reality that there are still cultural and generational barriers for men to accept that they suffer from a psychological condition and the impact is only seen until something happens, says the startup”, explain.
To these data is added those revealed by the Inegi, which highlights that in Mexico, there are 10.4 deaths per hundred thousand men, due to suicide per year, as opposed to the 2.2 cases per hundred thousand women.
Likewise, the National Program for the Prevention of Suicide (PRONAPS) highlighted that precisely among the risk factors are some problems related to mental health, such as depression, anxiety and psychiatric disorders, as well as consumption of psychoactive substances, low level of socioeconomic, loss of employment, social tension, problems in the family, in social relationships and in support systems.
Given this, the co-founder of Cuéntame, Fernando Chávez, revealed that the men of the younger generations are the most concerned about addressing their psychological ailments.
And according to the study, men between 26 and 35 years old, those considered millennials, are the ones who access the platform the most with 52.7 percent; while those who take more therapies are between 26 and 40 years old.
Ultimately, this data demonstrates how organizations should seek to reduce the impact caused by conditions such as anxiety, depression, and stress, increase engagement in the workplace, and promote a culture of well-being that inspires and motivates people, whether that this will benefit the results that this employee brings to your company.
