Studio Ghibli has made the decision not to broadcast any trailer or any promotional material for its next film How do you live? (Kimi-tachi wa Do Ikiru ka) before its commercial release in theaters in Japan, with the exception of the poster that the same production house published at the end of 2022. This was revealed by the co-founder of Ghibli and producer of the film, toshio suzukiIn a recent interview with Shukan Bunshun.
For now, this new animated feature film directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away) is scheduled to hit theaters in Japan on July 14, 2023.
Today producer Toshio Suzuki stated that Studio Ghibli will not release any images, trailers or advertisements before the release of Hayao Miyazaki’s new film, How do you live?on July 14,” the site wrote. Web Catsuka in the report shared via Twitter. “This old teaser poster [anexo al tuit] it will remain the only image available.”
Of the little that is known about this film, it is that it is inspired by the book How do you live?, published in 1937 in the name of the author Genzaburo Yoshino and recognized as a classic of Japanese literature. In fact, Miyazaki considers it his favorite childhood reading and began working on a film “adaptation” in mid-2016. The project, presumably now the last of his vast filmography, would be dedicated to the grandson of the octogenarian filmmaker.

The original novel is about a teenager born in Tokyo who, after the death of his father, begins to ask himself many essential questions of life and begins a spiritual journey where the advice and teachings of his uncle are vital for his growth. It was previously reported that the film would not be a literal adaptation. Rather, it tells an original story, written by Miyazaki, and the book (by itself) becomes a key element in the fiction.
In 2019, Suzuki announced that How do you live? It did not have a deadline to complete its production. A year earlier, the same producer announced that Ghibli could take between three and four years to complete the film, ensuring that this project was requiring them to do things that they could not before.
On the other hand, there is still no information regarding its potential launch in international markets. In fact, World of Reels reports that Hayao Miyazaki is opposed to the idea of taking it to the festival circuit, although Toshio Suzuki is still trying to convince him to present it, at least, in Venice.
