When an accident arises it is important not to lose your cool and know how to act.
No matter how many precautions you take, the baby can put, voluntarily or by accident, small objects (a button, a coin …) in the mouth, nose, eyes and even ears (this accident is more frequent after 18 months). In most cases, the wisest course is to take the child to the emergency room; for example, if a sharp object enters your eye, you should go without delay to check that there is no injury to the cornea. But sometimes, you need to act fast to avoid complications.
Ears
If your child has inserted an object into his ear, do not try to remove it. It is best to take him to a medical center as soon as possible. It is only advisable to act in the event that an insect has entered the ear.
Tips
1. Tilt the head so that the ear is up and add a drop of oil to immobilize the bug and bring it to the surface.
2. If the insect does not come out, take it to the emergency department as soon as possible.
Choking
It occurs when an object enters the airways (larynx, trachea, or bronchi) instead of going to the digestive tract (esophagus and stomach). The baby can choke on a button, but also on a piece of food.
As long as you can expel him by patting yourself on the back, the incident doesn’t matter. Very different is that the child has difficulty breathing and his face becomes congested. Then you have to call an ambulance, and while medical assistance arrives, act quickly.
From the moment the child chokes, it must be attempted to expel the object, but always by his own means. If the described practices do not have an effect, it is preferable to transfer him to the emergency room.
1. Take the baby upside down and support him on your forearm with the head lower than the trunk. With the pad in hand, give him five sharp blows between the shoulder blades to make it easier for the foreign body to fall under its own weight.
2. If the object does not come out with the previous blows, place the baby on his back and rest his back on your forearm, again with his head lower than the trunk. Place the tips of the index and middle fingers in the center of the chest (one finger below the nipples) and press five times.
Eyes
If you have got dust, dirt or sand, avoid rubbing your eye and put a few drops of saline.
If the foreign body does not come out and is in the white part, wet the tip of a clean handkerchief and try to catch it with it. If you don’t see it or it doesn’t come out, don’t touch it anymore and take it to the doctor.
