Formula E has wrapped up the first third of its 2021-22 season with a vibrant and tactical Monaco ePrix. The final victory went to Stoffel Vandoorne after keeping a cool head in the most critical moments of the test and know how to take advantage of your opportunity. A triumph of great value for the Mercedes EQ driver, both for being the first of the season and for being a necessary and important part of Vandoorne’s new leadership. The Belgian now leads the classification of the electric series with 81 points.
Nyck de Vries was expected to spearhead the Mercedes EQ project after winning the championship. Nevertheless, the most regular pilot within the german squad is being Vandoorne. The Belgian achieved a podium in Ad-Diriyah, was third in one of the two races in Rome and has added this victory in Monaco. He only has one race out of the points, a regular exercise that has helped him to become the leader of Formula E with 81 points, six units more than Jean-Eric Vergne has after being third in Monaco.
Behind both, a Mitch Evans has been placed who seems determined not to let go of the head train once he’s hooked on it with his double victory in Rome. The Jaguar driver was second in Monaco and already has 72 points, one more of those that Robin Frijns has who has little to envy the leader Vandoorne in terms of regularity, although in the case of the Envision Racing driver he still does not have a win in his private locker. With everything, Frijns accumulates three podiums so far this season.
Vandoorne, Vergne, Evans and Frijns form the first group in the fight for the title, since after the Monaco ePrix the classification has changed a lot. The retirements of Edo Mortara, André Lotterer and Pascal Wehrlein have put all three more than 30 points behind the leader. After reaping his second consecutive zero, Mortara adds 49 points, while the Porsche drivers remain with 43 and 42 units. The current champion Nyck de Vries, tenth in Monaco, does not exceed 39 points.
Vandoorne’s victory also allows Mercedes EQ to lead the overall team standings with a total of 120 points, fifteen units more than DS Techeetah. The structure of Jaguar Racing is not far from both, since the official formation of the British firm adds 94 points. Envision Racing stays at 87, for the 86 that Venturi has and the 85 of the Tag Heuer Porsche team. Unlike the general by pilots, here are six formations that are separated by a small margin of points.
