One of the oldest institutions in the country is the IMSS because it is about to turn 80 and within its multiple programs it has one to be a volunteer. It is open to anyone who wants to join in an altruistic and selfless way and the objective is to provide support to different types of patients. In parallel, it also works to support medical personnel who often cannot with so many activities to carry out.
How many are there in Mexico?
According to the most recent report, there are 1,867 registered volunteers throughout the country. Thanks to their work, social and emotional well-being is offered to patients receiving medical treatment for a chronic illness.
In this regard, Dr. Alejandra Aburto de Robledo, Honorary President of IMSS Volunteering, He stressed that they are working on their professionalization. The idea is to best support medical and nursing staff, as well as relatives of pediatric cancer patients, older adults, and women who just had their baby.
Requirements that all interested parties must meet
In that tenor, Anyone can join the IMSS as a volunteer. What is needed is to register in the educational digital channel eduTK IMSS. The next step is to take a course and an introductory exam on the activities that are carried out. Subsequently, an interview is carried out to be channeled to the activity in which they can best develop.
Activities they can do
- I am Rosa IMSS, talks for the prevention of breast cancer and delivery of handmade breast prostheses for women whose line of treatment was mastectomy.
- Craft workshop, dedicated to family members who spend a long time caring for their hospitalized patients or who receive long-term treatments.
- El Cafecito, Donation of food and beverages, according to the characteristics and climate of each state, dedicated to supporting the stay of family caregivers
- Hospital toy libraries, Space within hospital facilities where patients and family caregivers participate in readings and games, positively influencing mood, promoting the development of different skills and adaptation to the new environment
- Shelters, direct support for family members with facilities where they can sleep, eat, bathe, wash their clothes and be close to their patient.
- Ringo’s Bazar, through the sale of donated clothes, toys and objects, funds are collected that are used to purchase prostheses, wheelchairs, walkers and various needs of the patients.
- Hospital accompaniment and informative talks about blood and organ donation.
