According to the SSA, the use of trans fats causes almost 20,000 preventable deaths a year in Mexico.
Trans fats clog arteries and increase the risk of coronary heart disease.
According to PAHO, trans fat intake is responsible for more than 500,000 premature deaths from coronary heart disease each year.
Yesterday, the Mexican Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved the regulation of trans fats to the point of almost completely banning them in the food, oils, and beverages that Mexicans consume. Therefore, the Ministry of Health (SSA) celebrates the modification of the use of trans fats in food and beverages by the Plenary of the Chamber of Deputies of the opinion on the draft that adds article 216 bis to the General Health Law.
According to the official statement from the SSA, This modification establishes that edible oils and fats, as well as foods and non-alcoholic beverages, may not contain partially hydrogenated oils, known as trans fats, added during their industrial preparation in their sales presentation to the public.
The modification was approved with 472 votes in favor, zero against and zero abstentions, promoted by the Ministry of Health, the Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell Ramírez, He pointed out on social networks that this measure, together with frontal labeling, will reduce the prevalence and metabolic cardiovascular mortality, since most of the trans fats or trans fatty acids (TFA) that people consume come from junk products.
What are the health risks of trans fats?
According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), increased consumption of trans fats (> 1% of total energy intake) is associated with an increased risk of CHD and death from this cause. Trans fat (TFA) intake is responsible for more than 500,000 premature deaths from coronary heart disease each year.
According to MedlinePlus, the body does not need or get any benefit from trans fats. Consuming these fats increases your risk of health problems.
Risks of cardiovascular diseases:
- Trans fats increase your LDL (bad) cholesterol.
- They lower your HDL (good) cholesterol.
- Having high LDL levels along with low HDL levels can cause cholesterol to build up in your arteries (blood vessels). This increases your chances of developing heart disease or stroke.
Weight gain and risk of diabetes:
- Many high-fat foods, such as baked and fried goods, are high in trans fat.
- Like all fats, trans fats contain 9 calories per gram. Consuming too much fat can cause unwanted weight gain. Being overweight increases your risk of diabetes, heart disease, and other health problems.
