Successful IMSS initiative
The objective is to contribute to the reduction of major complications —and even death— of those admitted to this hospital with AMI data, explained the general director of the General Hospital of MexicoGuadalupe Mercedes Lucía Guerrero Avendaño.
This initiative emerged in 2015 at the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). Its transition was gradual and until 2018 its implementation was completed in all the units of the country. Until January 2022, he had managed to save the lives of 6 thousand patients.
He reported that, with the entry into operation of this code, the institution actively participates in the National Program for the Reduction of Mortality from Acute Myocardial Infarction AMI-MX (Premia) of the Ministry of Health.
On average, cardiovascular diseases in the General Hospital of Mexico “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga they represent the fourth most frequent cause of ailments treated in the Emergency Department, in which people of the male gender between 50 and 65 years of age predominate.

Guerrero Avendaño emphasized that the Emergency Service of the General Hospital of Mexico “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga It has the technology established in the international guidelines for the assessment and management of AMI, which offers the patient the possibility of receiving timely and quality intervention.
What does the Heart Attack Code program consist of?
He explained that patients who present at the Emergency Department with clinical signs of heart attack receive immediate care in which a diagnosis is made in less than 10 minutes.
Once diagnosed, the person is treated with an intravenous medication in less than 30 minutes; or in his case, in the catheterization room, a balloon and mesh procedure (angioplasty) is performed and in less than 90 minutes from his admission, he is stabilized and goes to intensive care surveillance for his recovery.
To provide the comprehensive care necessary for these cases, the Hospital General de México has a multidisciplinary team made up of emergency physicians, cardiologists, hemodynamicists and intensive care.
At the beginning of operations, two people were treated, who are stable and receiving care in the emergency and hemodynamics area of intensive coronary care and in accordance with national and international regulations for the care of acute myocardial infarction.
Annually, approximately 120 people with this pathology are treated at the hospital. With the heart attack code it is expected to avoid complications and improve the quality of life in people, concluded Guerrero Avendaño.
