Despite the fact that today we are on a long weekend in Spain, it seems that the wheel does not stop turning in the rest of the territories, which is how we have been able to see that in Japan a movement has taken place that very few could have expected, since just a few hours ago it has been confirmed that Square Enix has sold all of its non-Japanese studios together with all the IPs of these studies.
It should be clarified that this is not the same as the company having sold Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, among many others, since it should be noted that it is only from NON-Japanese studiesthat is, Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal and Square Enix Montréal (which will change its name after this seen the seen).
And along with this, too more than 50 IPs would have been sold including Tomb Raider, Thief, Deus Ex, Marvel’s Avengers, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Legacy of Kain, among many others, which means, in a certain sense, the loss of ownership over some of the most relevant brands of the industry.
Sagas like Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Avengers, among many others are no longer part of Square Enix
In this way, the purchase would have been in favor of Embracer Group, a Swedish video game company formerly known as Nordic Games Licensing AB and THQ Nordic AB. And it is that this group, which in recent years has been acquiring one study after another, would have carried out this purchase for $300 million.
Also, in a press release, Embracer Group has announced that this acquisition affects 1,100 employees between the three studies, thus covering eight different locations around the globe. All that said, hopefully the deal will close. the second quarter of fiscal year 2022/2023.
A new chapter in our story begins as we announce a plan to join the @embracergroup Familia. Read the press release for details: https://t.co/wQNTycPHYQ pic.twitter.com/MHbwBsV6vF

As you can see, this is a purchase that will end much earlier than Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, mainly because it is not as massive. Similarly, it should be noted that Square Enix loses Tomb Raider shortly after announcing a new installment developed with Unreal Engine 5.
