Do you know when there will be holidays and festive bridges this 2023 in Spain? Knowing the holidays is important so that you can prepare to take a break, plan a short trip and spend time with family or friends. Therefore, here we give you the list. Take note.
The labor calendar is the document that establishes year after year the list of national labor holidays and long weekends. The list includes the holidays of each autonomous community and of the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. Two other local holidays are also added in each of the country’s municipalities.
This list is published before the beginning of the year in the State official newsletter and is the responsibility of the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy.
HOW ARE THE HOLIDAYS DIVIDED IN SPAIN?
If we take into account that the total number of non-working days cannot exceed 14 holidays per year, the distribution would be as follows:
- 8 national holidays.
- 4 regional holidays chosen by the autonomous communities.
- 2 local holidays chosen by the municipalities.
NOTE: In order to comply with these 14-day limits, the autonomous communities are free to replace certain holidays with others of a local scope in which to celebrate the patron saint festivities. The detailed list is in the web portal of the General State Administration.
WHAT ARE THE HOLIDAYS IN SPAIN IN 2023?
The list of national holidays that are celebrated throughout Spain has eight non-replaceable and one movable:
- January 6th: Epiphany of the Lord (Friday)
- Friday April 7: Good Friday (First bank holiday).
- Monday May 1: Labor Day (Second bank holiday).
- Tuesday August 15: Assumption of the Virgin.
- Thursday October 12: National Holiday of Spain.
- Wednesday, November 1: All Saints.
- Wednesday December 6: Spanish Constitution Day.
- Friday December 8: Immaculate Conception (Third festive bridge).
- Monday December 25: Christmas (Fourth bank holiday).
NOTE: Some autonomous communities may further extend these multi-day weekends, because they can adjust their calendar with other holidays such as Holy Thursday and Easter Monday.
Other holidays that only some autonomous communities celebrate:
- Holy Thursday (varies according to the lunar calendar).
- March 19 (San José) or July 25 (Santiago Apóstol).
WHAT ARE THE SUBSTITUTE HOLIDAYS?
These are the holidays that apply to the entire Spanish territory, but the different regions can change the dates for other holidays that are more typical of them by tradition. Below is the list of replaceable national holidays of 2023as well as the communities that have kept these holidays in their work calendar:
- January 2 Monday following the New Year’s Party: Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Castilla y León and Murcia.
- January 6 Epiphany of the Lord: Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra, the Basque Country, La Rioja, Ceuta and Melilla.
- April 6, Holy Thursday: Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra, the Basque Country, La Rioja, Ceuta and Melilla.
- July 25, Santiago Apostle: Castilla y León, Galicia, Navarra and the Basque Country.
WHAT ARE THE REGIONAL FESTIVALS?
Next, the holidays that are only celebrated in the autonomous communities:
- Aragon: April 24, Monday after Saint George, Aragon Day.
- Asturias: September 8, Asturias Day.
- Balearics: March 1, Balearic Day and April 10, Easter Monday.
- Canary Islands: May 30, Canary Islands Day.
- Cantabria: July 28, Cantabria Institutions Day and September 15, La Bien Aparecida.
- Castilla la Mancha: May 31, Castilla-La Mancha Day and June 8, Corpus Christi.
- Catalonia: April 10 (Easter Monday), June 24 (San Juan), September 11 (National Holiday of Catalonia) and December 26 (San Esteban).
- Valencian Community: April 10 (Easter Monday), June 24 (San Juan) and October 9 (Valencian Community Day).
- Estremadura: February 21, Carnival and September 8, Extremadura Day.
- Galicia: May 17, Galician Literature Day.
- Madrid’s community: May 2, Festival of the Community of Madrid.
- Region of Murcia: June 9, Day of the Region of Murcia.
- Navarre: April 10, Easter Monday.
- Basque Country: April 10, Easter Monday.
- The Rioja: April 10, Easter Monday and June 9, La Rioja Day.
- Ceuta: June 29 (Eidul Adha Sacrifice Festival), August 5 (Our Lady of Africa) and September 2 (Ceuta Day).
- Melilla: April 21 (Eid Fitr Festival) and June 29 (Sacrifice Festival-Aid Adha).

This is the case of July 16, Day of the Virgen del Carmen (patron saint of sailors), which is celebrated in many coastal towns with a strong fishing tradition. Other municipalities, for example, choose as a non-business day the date on which their council was established.
