After several weeks of controversy, the film finally has a release date in Mexico. Here we present the trailer and everything you need to know.
What is it about?
The film tells the story of Tim Billard, a former US Homeland Security agent. After several years of working to serve his country, Ballard quits his job and plunges into the underworld of child trafficking, especially in Latin American countries. Thanks to his knowledge and his strong conviction, the former agent decides to do everything possible to save the lives and futures of hundreds of children.
Who is behind the movie?
Although many consider Mel Gibson as the director of this story, the truth is that the actor has only recommended the tape through various means. This is due to his friendly relationship with the protagonist. A few days ago, Eduardo Verástegui, producer of the project, shared a video on his Instagram account where Gibson can be seen. There he affirmed that the first step to eradicate child trafficking was “become aware”and therefore invited to see Sound of freedom
It is directed by Alejandro Monteverde, who worked with Verástegui on the big little. He wrote the script with Rod Barr. In the cast we can find the aforementioned Jim Caviezel, Mira Sorvino, Bill Camp, Javier Godino, José Zúñiga, the Mexican Gerardo Taracena and Eduardo Verástegui.
What is the movie around Sound of Freedom?
Although work on the script for the film began in 2015, filming did not begin until the summer of 2018. Initially, 20th Century Fox had agreed to distribute the film in theaters, but after the Disney purchase, the release was cancelled. The filmmakers battled for years to get a studio to acquire the rights and give the film a premiere under the best conditions.
Eduardo Verástegui attended with Angel Studios, whose biggest hits are movies and series with a religious background. In less than 5 days, both parties signed the necessary contract. According to his statements through social networks, Netflix, Amazon and Lionsgate were some of the studios that rejected the tape. The reason? Apparently, how complicated the subject. And it is that the tape is linked to the ideas of the QAnona conspiracy theory that points to the existence of a “Deep State” or elite in the United States.
This elite would be made up of Hollywood actors, politicians and high-ranking officials related to an international network of pedophilia and child trafficking. The exposure you make sound of freedom on this theory has been the reason for several believers of it to complain to important media for the little diffusion they have given to the tape. They assure that these platforms hide something and seek that the least amount of public go to the cinemas.
For his part, other social media users claim the tape is a religious pamphlet, and point to the participation of Eduardo Verástegui as proof of this. It is well known that the Mexican actor and producer advocates “good customs”, the “traditional family” and religion. In addition, they discredit the conspiracy theory to which the film refers.
An unexpected success story
Against all odds, sound of freedom It is a success at the American box office. Since its premiere on July 4, the film has remained in the top 3 box office. So far it accumulates almost $50 million dollars in that territory and some days it has surpassed tapes like The Night of the Demon: The Red Door and Indiana Jones and the dial of fate.
However, not everything is honey on flakes. Some media have pointed out that religious groups bought large amounts of tickets and give them away to as many people as possible to go to the theaters. Even Angel Studios has offered the opportunity to purchase up to 100 tickets for the price of 50. While such a practice is not prohibited or illegal, it is clear that the numbers do not reflect fully real audience interest.
