A UK judge has approved a class action lawsuit against Sony PlayStation that has caught the attention of the community. The plaintiffs, represented by attorney Alex Neill, accuse Sony of setting “alleged excessive pricing in relation to digital games and in-game content”.
Compensation is being sought for nine million players in an amount ranging between £600 million and £5 billion. The allegation focuses on Sony’s conduct, alleging an abuse of a dominant position that breaches UK and EU competition laws.
One of the most serious allegations is that “Sony sets the price of digital games and game content and charges a 30% commission for each purchase,” which results in inflated prices for the consumer.
He UK Competition Appeal Tribunal has allowed the case to move forward, on the condition that those who made purchases after the case was filed in 2022 be excluded from the plaintiff class.
Alex Neill, an experienced consumer rights advocate, is leading this case through an instrumental company called Alex Neill Class Representative. Neill expects the process to take several years to reach a final resolution.
Funding for this lawsuit comes from the Woodsford Agency, which means that no class member is required to make any payments to join the cause.
