Sony Interactive Entertainment acquired Bungie, the studio that created Halo Combat Evolved and Destiny. We tell you all the details, in this note!
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the acquisition of Bungie (creators of Destiny Y Halo Combat Evolved) for 3,600 million dollars: it is one of the largest acquisitions in the video game industry in recent years.
What will happen to Destiny, its most important IP?
“We’ve had a strong partnership with Bungie since the inception of the Destiny franchise, and I couldn’t be more excited to officially welcome the studio to the PlayStation family.” He said Jim Ryan, head of SIE. “This is an important step in our strategy to extend the reach of PlayStation to a wider audience” he added.
As for the potential of Destiny as a future exclusive of PlayStation, Sony I affirm that Bungie will remain a multi-platform studio with the possibility of “self-publish and reach players wherever they want to play”. When the deal closes, the studio will be “an independent subsidiary” from SIE directed by a board of directors made up of Peter Parsons (director and president of Bungie currently) and the rest of the management team.
“We understand how vital the Bungie community is to the studio and we look forward to supporting them as they remain independent and continue to grow.” declared Jim Ryan. “Like Bungie, our community is central to the DNA of PlayStation and our shared passion for the gamer and building the best place to play will now further evolve.” he added.
One of the most prestigious studios in science fiction FPS
Bungie is one of the most prestigious studios when it comes to science fiction video games, with titles like Halo Combat Evolved Y Destiny in your portfolio. In recent years, the developer became independent when it disassociated itself from both microsoft like Activision, and currently works with destiny 2, a free-to-play FPS for consoles and PC with an expansion planned for release in February.
“Both Bungie and SIE believe that game worlds are just the beginning of what our IP will become” He said Parson’s, director and president of Bungie. “Our original universes have immense potential, and with the support of SIE, we will drive Bungie to become a global multimedia entertainment company dedicated to fulfilling our creative vision.”
Other acquisitions in recent months
The purchase of Bungie by Sony follows other recent acquisitions such as Activision-Blizzard by microsoft (68.7 billion dollars), in addition to Zynga by take-two ($12.7 billion).
