Someone has left another message in Elden Ring, this time referencing the legendary fantasy franchise The Lord of the Rings. Since the game’s launch last week, players have used its messaging system to leave funny, tongue-in-cheek, or referential notes, a popular example being the multitude of Fortnite memes appearing in Elden Ring.
At first sight, Elden Ring and The Lord of the rings They have a lot in common. Aside from their similar names, both IPs have instantly recognizable dark fantasy references such as knights, dragons, and wizards. The Elden Ring story was even written by George RR Martin, who often cites JRR Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings as major influences on his work. Although The Lands Between has no explicit link to Mordor or its environs, the fictional region’s varied topography and treacherous landscape make for a suitable setting for adventure, and it would not be unusual for an Elden Ring player to find themselves in a situation that remember Tolkien’s work. Elden Ring even features a temporary co-op feature, making it easy to role-play as a band of brave Tolkien-esque travelers.
This similarity is certainly recognized by at least one player. Reddit user Master-Spare-4782 recently shared a screenshot taken from the game, showing a message perched on the edge of a magma-filled abyss. The message reads: “Try throwing Elden’s ring!“. It’s written in the weird way that FromSoftware’s messaging system requires, but it seems like a clear reference to Frodo/Isildur throwing the Ring of Power onto Mount Doom.
While the messages in Elden Ring, like in most FromSoftware games, can serve as helpful clues most of the time, it’s always nice to see some cheeky humor now and then. Elden Ring can be a challenging, sometimes hair-raising experience, so a little frivolity is always welcome. This post is just one example of how players can make their own fun in the game.
