In life there are activities that are necessary and obligatory. One of the first on the list is eating because it is the basis for good health, although it is not the only one. Sleep is also found and although it seems too simple in reality not everyone has the correct sleep habits. In fact, it is essential to prevent a large number of diseases and illnesses.
With this in mind, since 2008 March 18 was designated as World Sleep Day. The purpose of this health event is to publicize the benefits of rest for the body and mind. In addition, it is also a date that works to promote the prevention of sleep disorders and their management.
Characteristics of the dream of Mexicans
For her part, Luuna announced the results of her second survey conducted online on the sleeping habits of Mexicans and shows the main sleeping features they have.
The survey was carried out between February 28 and March 2, 2022, and 1,200 people from all over the country participated. Most of them are between 25-34 years old (43%) and they were mostly men with 58.7%.
The first result obtained is that the vast majority of people (women and men) sleep between 6-7 hours (65%). While 9% sleep 5 or less hours. This is that 74% sleep less than the recommended 8 hours of sleep on average. While 60% said sleeping after 11 at night, something not recommended for good sleep hygiene.
In relation to who they share their sleep with, 55% said they sleep with their partner, 41% alone and 18% usually sleep with their pet.
Majority of the population suffers from sleep disorders
More than 50% indicated have a sleep disorder, with insomnia being the most common ailment. It was mentioned by at least 25% of the participants. The vast majority, 70%, said that the main reason for not sleeping well is stress and anxiety. And 37% claim to have less quality of sleep as a result of the pandemic. For their part, the number of women who sleep between 8 and 9 hours a day is lower (22%), compared to the 27% registered in the case of men.
When answering about the habits they have to fall asleep, 43% said they watch television, followed by 28% who listen to music, 20% who read a book and 15% who exercise. Some of these habits are contrary to good practices recommended to achieve a restful sleep. The main indications are to avoid exposure to blue light emitted by electronic devices, maintain a noise-free environment and avoid exercising before or close to bedtime because it causes an increase in the production of adrenaline and activates the body.
For his part, Dr. Javier Velazquez, Director of the sleep clinic of the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM), points out that sleeping well is an essential element linked to the strength of our immune system. He also added that in Mexico, where there are high levels of obesity, it is well established that sleep restriction favors the onset of diabetes.
“Sleeping well has to do with people’s quality of life. Pursuing good sleeping habits is the cheapest option to prevent diseases and help your immune system.
Finally, the sleep specialist pointed out that a restful sleep helps to have more energy, avoid recurrent tiredness and fatigue. This allows you to have a better performance in daily tasks. It also helps to have better concentration, memory, learning ability, creativity, increases our ability to solve problems and judgment, and helps control anxiety and stress.
